Add an Authorized User to Chase Credit Card

Understanding Authorized Users on Chase Credit Cards

An authorized user is a person you give permission to use your Chase credit card account. When you add an authorized user, Chase issues them a card linked to your account. The authorized user can make purchases using that card, but you remain the primary account holder and are responsible for all charges made on the account.

It's important to understand that adding an authorized user does not create a separate account or split responsibility for payments. All charges—whether made by you or the authorized user—go to your single bill. You receive one statement showing all transactions. This means the authorized user's spending directly affects your account balance and payment obligations.

Authorized users are different from account co-owners. A co-owner would have equal legal responsibility for the account and could make changes to account settings. An authorized user cannot change the account's terms, add or remove other users, or access customer service as the primary account holder. Chase treats the primary account holder as the only person with full control over the account.

People commonly add authorized users for various reasons. Parents may add teenage children to teach them about credit and money management. Spouses might add each other to a joint account for household spending. Business owners sometimes add employees to corporate cards. Some people add trusted family members to have backup access for emergencies.

Chase allows multiple authorized users on a single credit card account. There is no published limit on how many authorized users you can add, though Chase maintains the right to refuse additions in certain circumstances. Each authorized user receives their own physical card with their name printed on it.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding an authorized user, recognize that you will be financially responsible for all their charges. This is a commitment that requires trust and clear communication about spending limits and expectations.

Preparing to Add an Authorized User

Before contacting Chase to add an authorized user, gather the information you will need. Chase requires specific details about the person you want to add. Having this information ready makes the process faster and reduces the chance of errors or delays.

You will need the authorized user's full legal name exactly as it appears on their government-issued identification. Middle names and initials should match precisely. Chase uses this name to print on the physical card, so accuracy matters. If the name is incorrect on the card, the authorized user may face difficulties using it for purchases or verification.

Chase will ask for the authorized user's date of birth. This is standard information that credit card companies collect for identity verification purposes. Have the person's birth date in MM/DD/YYYY format ready when you make your request.

Consider your relationship to the person and what spending limits make sense. You may want to discuss with the authorized user what types of purchases are appropriate and what the monthly spending expectations are. Some primary account holders set mental limits or ask authorized users to keep receipts and report purchases. Others give authorized users complete freedom within their trust. This conversation should happen before you add them to avoid misunderstandings later.

Think about whether you want to monitor their spending. You can view all transactions on your monthly statement and through your Chase online account. Some account holders check statements regularly to track authorized user spending. Others only review statements when they arrive. Decide what oversight approach works for your situation.

Review your current credit card account to make sure it's in good standing. Chase may decline adding an authorized user if your account has recent delinquencies or serious issues, though this is uncommon for customers in good standing.

Practical Takeaway: Gather the authorized user's full legal name and date of birth, have a conversation about spending expectations, and decide how you'll monitor the account before making your request to Chase.

How to Add an Authorized User Through Chase Online

The easiest way to add an authorized user to most Chase credit cards is through the online banking platform. This method is available 24/7 and takes only a few minutes. Log into your Chase account at chase.com using your username and password.

Once logged in, navigate to your credit card account. Look for the card you want to add the authorized user to if you have multiple Chase credit cards. On the account page, find the option labeled "Manage Card" or "Card Settings." Different Chase card types may use slightly different language, but there will be a menu option for managing authorized users.

Click on the option to add an authorized user. You may see it called "Add an Authorized User" or within a larger "Authorized Users" section. Chase will prompt you to enter the authorized user's information. Fill in their full legal name, date of birth, and relationship to you (such as spouse, child, or family member).

Review the information you entered for accuracy. Misspelled names or incorrect dates of birth can cause delays in card production or activation. After confirming everything is correct, submit your request. Chase will display a confirmation message indicating that your request has been received.

The physical card typically arrives within 7-10 business days, though this timing can vary. Chase will mail it to the address on file for your account. If you want the card sent to a different address, contact Chase before submitting your request or after receiving confirmation.

Once the card arrives, the authorized user can start using it immediately. There is no separate activation process for authorized user cards in most cases—they work when they arrive. You and the authorized user should both check that the cardholder name on the card is correct and matches what was requested.

Practical Takeaway: Adding an authorized user online through Chase's website is the fastest method and can be completed in minutes without phone calls or visits to a branch.

Adding an Authorized User Over the Phone

If you prefer to speak with someone at Chase or encounter technical issues with the online process, you can add an authorized user by calling Chase customer service. This method works for any Chase credit card and allows you to ask questions during the process.

Find the phone number for Chase customer service on the back of your credit card or through the Chase website. Call during business hours, which are typically Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time, though hours vary by service line. Weekend and holiday hours may be limited.

Be prepared to provide your account information and identification when you call. Chase will ask for your credit card number and may verify your identity by asking for your Social Security number or other security information. Have your card available when you make the call to speed this process.

Tell the customer service representative that you want to add an authorized user. Provide the person's full legal name, date of birth, and your relationship to them. The representative will confirm this information and ask if there are any special instructions, such as sending the card to a different address.

The representative will process your request and provide a confirmation number. Write down this number in case you need to reference the request later. Ask about expected delivery time for the physical card. They can tell you whether the card will be sent to your current mailing address or if you can specify a different location.

Phone requests typically result in card delivery within the same timeframe as online requests—usually 7-10 business days. There is no advantage to calling versus using the online method in terms of speed, but some people find it reassuring to confirm the request with a person.

Practical Takeaway: Phone-based requests work well if you have questions, technical difficulties, or simply prefer speaking with a representative, but expect the same delivery timeline as online requests.

Managing and Monitoring Authorized Users

After adding an authorized user, you have several options for managing their access and monitoring their spending. These tools help you maintain control over your account while allowing the authorized user to make purchases.

Review your monthly statement carefully to see all charges made by authorized users. Your Chase statement will show transaction details including the purchase amount, merchant name, and date. Some transactions may also show whether they were made with the physical card, online, or through another method. This information helps you spot unauthorized charges or spending patterns you want to discuss.

You can view detailed transaction history online through your Chase account at any time. Log in and navigate to your credit card account to see recent charges. Most transactions appear within 1-3 business days of purchase, though some may take longer depending on how the merchant processes the charge. This real-time visibility lets you monitor spending as it happens rather than waiting for the monthly statement.
