How Costco's Optical Department Eye Exams Work

Costco operates optical departments in many of its warehouse locations across the United States. These departments offer eye exams performed by licensed optometrists or ophthalmologists. The eye exam process at Costco follows standard procedures similar to those at other optical retailers, though some details may vary by location.

During a typical Costco eye exam, the optometrist will perform several tests to measure your vision and eye health. These tests include checking your visual acuity (how clearly you see at different distances), measuring your eye pressure to screen for glaucoma, examining your eye muscles and peripheral vision, and looking at the structures inside and outside your eyes using specialized equipment. The exam usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour from start to finish.

One important distinction to understand: Costco's optical departments operate independently from the warehouse membership. You do not need to be a Costco member to receive an eye exam at Costco Optical. This means anyone can walk in and schedule an appointment or receive services, regardless of membership status. Some Costco locations even allow non-members to purchase eyeglasses and contact lenses without a membership card.

The cost of eye exams at Costco varies by location but typically ranges from $60 to $100 for a basic exam. Some locations may charge different rates depending on the type of exam or additional testing needed. Costco does not bill insurance directly in most cases, though you can request an itemized receipt to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement if your plan covers eye exams.

Many Costco locations use modern diagnostic equipment for their exams, including digital retinal imaging, optical coherence tomography (OCT) machines, and automated refraction systems. These tools allow optometrists to detect certain eye conditions earlier and provide more detailed information about your eye health. However, not every Costco location has identical equipment, so capabilities may differ between locations.

Practical takeaway: Call your nearest Costco Optical department to learn what services and equipment they offer, their current pricing, and their appointment availability. Having this information before scheduling helps you understand what to expect and whether their services match your needs.

Finding Your Nearest Costco Optical Location

Locating a Costco with an optical department requires a bit of research, as not every Costco warehouse includes this service. As of recent counts, approximately 650 Costco warehouses operate in the United States, but only about 500 of these locations have optical departments. This means roughly 25% of Costco locations do not have on-site eye care services.

The most direct way to find a Costco Optical near you is to visit Costco's official website and use their warehouse locator tool. Enter your city, state, or zip code, and the tool displays nearby Costco locations. The results typically indicate whether each location has an optical department. You can filter results to show only locations with optical services, which saves time compared to calling each warehouse individually.

Another approach is to call your nearest Costco warehouse directly. The main warehouse phone line can direct you to the optical department or confirm whether eye exam services are available. Staff members can also provide information about appointment availability, hours of operation for the optical center (which may differ from warehouse hours), and current pricing. Many Costco optical departments operate on different schedules than the main warehouse, often with extended hours on certain days.

If you live in a rural area or far from any Costco location, you may find that traveling to the nearest warehouse is impractical. In these cases, you might consider other optical retailers such as LensCrafters, Walmart Vision Centers, or independent optometry practices. However, for those with convenient access to Costco, the cost savings can be substantial compared to other national chains.

Some states have Costco locations concentrated in urban and suburban areas, while rural regions may have no Costco optical services within reasonable driving distance. Checking a map before searching helps you understand whether a Costco Optical visit is feasible for your situation.

Practical takeaway: Use Costco's warehouse locator on their website to identify locations with optical departments in your area. Note the addresses, phone numbers, and optical department hours, which you can keep for future reference when scheduling appointments or planning visits.

Scheduling an Eye Exam Appointment

Scheduling a Costco eye exam typically requires contacting the optical department directly by phone. Unlike some other eye care providers, most Costco Optical departments do not offer online appointment booking through their website. This means a phone call remains the primary method for reserving an exam slot. The optical department staff can discuss your availability, recommend specific time slots, and confirm your appointment over the phone.

When you call to schedule, be prepared to provide basic information: your name, phone number, and preferred appointment date and time. The staff may ask whether you are a new patient or an existing patient at that location, as this can affect scheduling. They may also ask about the reason for your visit—whether you need a routine exam, want to update an eyeglass prescription, or suspect an eye problem that needs evaluation. This information helps the optometrist prepare for your appointment.

Appointment availability varies by location and season. Busy Costco optical departments in high-population areas may have wait times of one to three weeks for appointments, while less busy locations might offer appointments within several days. During certain times of year, such as back-to-school season (July and August) or after the new year, appointment demand increases, and wait times may extend further.

When scheduling, ask about the optical department's cancellation policy and whether you receive a confirmation call or text before your appointment. Some locations confirm appointments 24 hours in advance, while others may not. Knowing this helps you avoid scheduling confusion. If you need to reschedule or cancel, contact the optical department as soon as possible to free up that time slot for other patients.

Walk-in appointments are sometimes available at Costco Optical departments, though availability varies widely by location. Some locations actively accept walk-ins during off-peak hours (typically mid-week mornings or early afternoons), while others operate by appointment only. If you prefer not to schedule in advance, calling ahead to ask whether walk-ins are currently being seen gives you a realistic picture of wait times.

Practical takeaway: Call your Costco Optical location at least one to two weeks before you want an appointment to secure your preferred time slot. Ask about their cancellation policy and confirmation procedures to prevent missed appointments.

What to Bring and How to Prepare for Your Appointment

Preparing for your Costco eye exam involves gathering a few important documents and information. Bringing your current glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them, helps the optometrist assess your current prescription and how well your existing correction is working. Even if you plan to purchase new eyeglasses or contacts at Costco, having your current correction available provides useful reference information.

If you have vision insurance or medical insurance that covers eye exams, bring your insurance card. While Costco Optical typically does not bill insurance directly, having your card information allows you to understand your coverage details and any out-of-pocket costs you might face. After the exam, you can request an itemized receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if your plan covers eye exams.

Bring a photo identification document. Costco Optical may request an ID as part of their patient intake process. A driver's license, passport, or state ID card works fine. This is standard practice at most medical and optical facilities.

If you have had eye problems in the past or received eye care elsewhere, bringing records from previous eye exams can be helpful. Medical history information—such as whether you have been treated for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or other eye conditions—informs the optometrist's examination approach. If you do not have physical records, the optometrist may contact your previous eye doctor's office to obtain this information with your permission.

On the day of your appointment, plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to complete intake paperwork. Expect the total visit to take 60 to 90 minutes, depending on how busy the optical department is and whether you plan to purchase eyeglasses or contact lenses after the exam. If you need to fit new glasses or order contacts, additional time may be necessary. Avoid scheduling appointments when you are in a rush or have limited time.
