Understanding SSH Keys and Why They Matter for Server Security

SSH keys are a pair of related security codes that work together to verify your identity when connecting to a computer server. Unlike passwords, which are typed in each time you log in, SSH keys use mathematical algorithms to create a connection that is much harder to break into. The system relies on two connected pieces: a public key and a private key. Think of it like a lock and key system where the public key acts as the lock that sits on the server, and your private key is the only key that can open it.

SSH stands for Secure Shell, and it has been the standard method for secure remote server access since the mid-1990s. According to recent security surveys, organizations using SSH key authentication experience 99.9% fewer unauthorized access attempts compared to password-only systems. This is because SSH keys use encryption standards that would take thousands of years to crack with current computer technology.

The main reason SSH keys matter is that passwords can be guessed, stolen, or intercepted during transmission. SSH keys, by contrast, are mathematically unique and cannot be guessed. Even if someone captures the data traveling between your computer and the server, they cannot use it to impersonate you because each connection creates a new, temporary encryption session.

Many major technology companies including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform require SSH keys for production server access. This reflects an industry-wide shift toward key-based authentication as the standard security practice. If you work with servers, development environments, or cloud computing platforms, learning to create and use SSH keys is a practical skill that applies across multiple professional contexts.

Practical takeaway: SSH keys provide stronger security than passwords because they use mathematical algorithms instead of words that can be guessed or stolen. They are the standard method used by professional development teams and cloud providers worldwide.

How SSH Key Pairs Work Together

SSH authentication depends on a matched pair of keys that work in tandem. When you generate an SSH key pair, your computer creates two files: the public key and the private key. These keys are mathematically linked so that data encrypted with one key can only be decrypted with the other.

The public key is placed on the server you want to access. Its name describes its function—it is public information that can be shared without security risk. You can post it online, email it to colleagues, or store it in multiple locations. The public key is simply a long string of characters that identifies the lock.

The private key stays on your personal computer and must be protected carefully. This is the only key that can unlock the connection when you try to log in. If someone obtains your private key, they can access any server where your corresponding public key is installed. For this reason, private keys should never be shared, emailed, or stored on servers.

When you attempt to connect to a server using SSH, the authentication process works like this: Your client software (the program on your computer) sends a connection request to the server. The server responds with a challenge—a random piece of data that needs to be encrypted. Your computer uses your private key to encrypt this challenge in a specific way. The server uses your public key to decrypt and verify this response. If the decryption works correctly, the server knows you possess the matching private key and grants you access. This entire process takes milliseconds.

The mathematical foundation of SSH keys typically uses RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) encryption or newer algorithms like ED25519. These algorithms are based on mathematical problems that are extremely difficult to reverse-engineer. RSA 2048-bit keys, which are standard, would require approximately 2^2048 possible attempts to crack through brute force. That number is larger than the total number of atoms in the observable universe.

Practical takeaway: Public keys go on servers, private keys stay on your computer. The server tests your private key without ever seeing it, making this system secure even if network data is intercepted.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Generating SSH Keys on Windows, Mac, and Linux

Creating an SSH key pair is a straightforward process that takes just a few minutes. The exact steps vary slightly depending on your operating system, but the basic procedure is the same across all platforms.

For Mac and Linux users: These operating systems include SSH tools built in. Open your terminal application and type: ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "your_email@example.com". Replace the email address with your actual email or a descriptive label. The -t flag specifies the type of key (ed25519 is a modern, secure choice), and -C adds a comment to help identify the key. The terminal will ask where you want to save the key. Press Enter to accept the default location, which is ~/.ssh/id_ed25519. Next, you'll be prompted to create a passphrase. A passphrase is an additional password that protects your private key file. Enter a passphrase (at least 8 characters) and confirm it. You now have two files: id_ed25519 (your private key) and id_ed25519.pub (your public key).

For Windows users: Windows 10 and later include OpenSSH, though you may need to enable it. Go to Settings, select "Apps," then "Apps & features," then "Optional features." Click "Add a feature" and search for "OpenSSH Client." Install it. Once installed, open PowerShell or Command Prompt and use the same command: ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "your_email@example.com". Follow the same steps as Mac and Linux users. Alternatively, you can download PuTTY or Git Bash, which both include SSH tools with graphical interfaces if you prefer not to use the command line.

After generating your keys, verify they were created correctly. On Mac and Linux, type: ls -la ~/.ssh/ and you should see both id_ed25519 and id_ed25519.pub files. To view your public key (which you'll need to copy to servers), type: cat ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub. The output is a long string starting with "ssh-ed25519." This entire string is your public key and is safe to share.

Key size recommendations: If you use RSA instead of ED25519, create at least 2048-bit keys with the command: ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048. While 1024-bit RSA keys exist, security experts no longer recommend them because computers have become fast enough that they pose a theoretical risk. The 2048-bit standard has been recommended since 2015 and remains secure. ED25519 keys are shorter and equally secure, making them the preferred modern choice.

Practical takeaway: Use ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "your_email@example.com" on any operating system to create modern, secure keys. Choose a strong passphrase and store your private key file securely on your computer.

Installing Your Public Key on Servers

Once you have generated your SSH key pair, the next step is placing your public key on any server you want to access. This process is straightforward but requires careful attention to detail.

The public key must be placed in a specific file on the server called authorized_keys, located in the ~/.ssh/ directory of your user account. For most servers, you will need existing access to complete this step. If you're setting up a brand new server, many cloud providers (including AWS, DigitalOcean, and Linode) allow you to paste your public key during the server creation process.

To copy your public key to an existing server, first display it using: cat ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub (on your personal computer, not the server). Select all the output text and copy it. Now, using an existing connection method (such as password login), access your server and navigate to the SSH configuration directory: mkdir -p ~/.ssh and cd ~/.ssh. Once there, open or create the authorized_keys file using a text editor such as nano: nano authorized_keys. Paste your public key on a new line and save the file. In nano, press Ctrl+X, then Y, then Enter to save.

After adding your public key, you must set the correct file permissions for security. The SSH system will refuse to work if permissions are incorrect. Use these commands: chmod 700 ~/.ssh and chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. The chmod command sets file permissions—700 means only the file
