Understanding Super Start Battery Types and Technology

Super Start batteries are a product line manufactured by Exell Battery Company, designed for vehicles that need reliable starting power. The line includes several types of batteries, each built for different vehicle sizes and climate conditions. Understanding the differences between these options helps you make informed decisions about which type might work for your situation.

Super Start produces lead-acid batteries, which remain the standard technology for vehicle starting systems. These batteries work by creating electrical current through a chemical reaction between lead plates and sulfuric acid electrolyte. When you turn your ignition key, this electrical current flows to your starter motor, cranking the engine. Lead-acid batteries have been used in vehicles for over a century because they are reliable, cost-effective, and well-understood by mechanics and technicians.

The Super Start battery line includes conventional flooded batteries, where the electrolyte is in liquid form and plates are submerged. These batteries require occasional maintenance, including checking and adding water to the cells. The company also manufactures maintenance-free batteries, which use a sealed design that prevents water loss through a one-way valve system. Additionally, some Super Start models feature absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology, where the electrolyte is absorbed into fiberglass mats between the lead plates. AGM batteries offer better performance in demanding conditions and can handle deeper discharge cycles than conventional batteries.

Climate conditions affect battery performance significantly. Cold weather reduces the chemical reaction speed inside a battery, meaning a battery rated for 600 cold cranking amps in moderate temperatures might only deliver 300 amps in freezing conditions. Super Start batteries are rated with cold cranking amps (CCA), a measure of how much current the battery can produce at 0°F for 30 seconds. Vehicles in northern climates benefit from batteries with higher CCA ratings. Conversely, batteries in warm climates may emphasize reserve capacity, which measures how long a battery can power your vehicle's essential systems if the alternator fails.

Practical takeaway: Before shopping for a Super Start battery, identify three pieces of information about your vehicle: the battery group size (found in your owner's manual or on your current battery), the cold cranking amp requirement, and your local climate conditions. This information narrows your options to batteries that will actually fit and perform in your specific situation.

Super Start Battery Group Sizes and Fitment

Battery group size refers to the physical dimensions and terminal placement of a battery. These standardized sizes, designated by numbers and letters like 24F, 65, or 78, ensure that a replacement battery will fit into the battery tray of your vehicle. Using the correct group size is essential because an incorrectly sized battery may not fit securely, could damage terminal connections, or might create electrical hazards.

The most common group sizes in North America include the following: Group 24 and 24F batteries are compact and typically used in smaller vehicles, sport utility vehicles, and some trucks. Group 65 and 65H batteries are medium-sized and fit many sedans and mid-size vehicles. Group 78 batteries are larger and found in full-size trucks and large vehicles. Group 51, 51R, and 52 designate smaller batteries often used in compact or imported vehicles. Super Start manufactures batteries in most of these sizes, allowing vehicle owners to find options that fit their specific vehicles.

Finding your vehicle's required battery group size involves checking several sources. Your vehicle's owner's manual lists the original battery specifications, including the group size. If you no longer have the manual, you can find this information through the vehicle manufacturer's website, by contacting a dealership parts department, or by consulting automotive reference guides available online. Another method is to look at your current battery if it is still present—the group size is printed on the label or battery case.

It is important to note that some vehicles have multiple battery options. For example, a truck might originally come with either a Group 65 or Group 78 battery depending on the engine size or options package. Using a battery with a different group size than originally specified could result in improper fitment, even if the terminals appear to connect. Improper fitment can cause the battery to move during vehicle operation, damaging terminals or creating dangerous situations.

Super Start batteries come in various group sizes with different electrical specifications within each size category. For instance, a Group 65 battery might be available in several CCA ratings, from 600 amps to 850 amps, depending on the model. Selecting the correct group size first, then choosing the appropriate electrical specifications within that size, ensures both fitment and performance.

Practical takeaway: Locate your vehicle's battery group size requirement through your owner's manual or dealership parts department before comparing Super Start battery options. This single piece of information eliminates unsuitable models and prevents fitment problems.

Cold Cranking Amps and Performance Ratings

Cold cranking amps (CCA) measure how much electrical current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F while maintaining at least 1.2 volts per cell (approximately 7.2 volts total for a 12-volt battery). This rating directly relates to how well your vehicle will start in cold weather. A battery with a higher CCA rating can crank your engine more powerfully in freezing temperatures, making cold starts more reliable.

Manufacturers determine CCA ratings through standardized laboratory tests. The battery is chilled to exactly 0°F, then a load is applied that draws current from the battery. Technicians measure the maximum current the battery can supply while staying above the minimum voltage threshold. This test simulates the demanding conditions of starting an engine when engine oil is thick and viscous from cold, requiring more electrical power from the starter motor.

Different vehicles require different CCA ratings based on engine size and design. A small four-cylinder engine might need a 500-600 CCA battery, while a large V8 engine could require 700-900 CCA. Diesel engines, which require more cranking power than gasoline engines, often need batteries rated at 1000 CCA or higher. Your vehicle's owner's manual specifies the recommended CCA range for your particular engine and model year.

Super Start offers batteries with varying CCA ratings within each group size. For example, their Group 65 batteries might range from 650 to 800 CCA depending on the specific model. Many vehicle owners in cold climates choose batteries with CCA ratings above the minimum requirement, providing extra starting reliability during extreme weather. However, exceeding the recommended range has no added benefit and only increases cost.

Beyond cold cranking amps, Super Start batteries include other performance ratings. Reserve capacity measures the number of minutes a fully charged battery can power essential systems (headlights, ignition, fuel pump) at 25 amps before voltage drops below 10.5 volts. This rating reflects how long you can drive with a failed alternator. Cranking amps (CA) or marine cranking amps (MCA) measure performance at 32°F, a less stringent standard than CCA. Some batteries display ampere-hour (Ah) ratings, indicating total energy storage capacity.

Practical takeaway: Match the CCA rating to your vehicle's engine size and your climate. Consult your owner's manual for the specified CCA range, then select a Super Start battery within that range. For cold climates, choose batteries at or slightly above the recommended minimum CCA. For warm climates, reserve capacity may matter more than maximum CCA.

Maintenance Requirements and Battery Lifespan

The lifespan of a Super Start battery depends on maintenance, climate conditions, driving patterns, and charging system health. Most vehicle batteries last between three and five years, though some last longer and others fail sooner. Conventional flooded batteries typically last three to four years, while maintenance-free and AGM batteries may reach four to five years or beyond. Understanding how to maintain your battery can extend its useful life and prevent unexpected failures.

Conventional flooded batteries, which contain liquid electrolyte, require periodic maintenance. The electrolyte naturally evaporates over time, lowering the fluid level in battery cells. If the plates become exposed to air, they oxidize and suffer permanent damage. Most battery manufacturers recommend checking the fluid level every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or monthly. If the level is low, distilled water should be added to cover the plates. Tap water contains minerals that can interfere with battery chemistry, so only distilled water should be used. Maintenance-free batteries use a sealed design with a one-way valve that allows gas to escape without admitting air, eliminating the need for water addition
