How Veterans Day Restaurant Discounts Work

Veterans Day falls on November 11th each year and celebrates military service members. Many restaurants across the United States offer special discounts on this day as a way to honor veterans. Understanding how these discounts function can help you make the most of dining out on this holiday.

Most restaurants that participate in Veterans Day promotions offer their discounts in one of several ways. Some establishments provide a percentage off the total bill, such as 10 or 15 percent. Others offer a fixed dollar amount discount, like $10 or $15 off purchases over a certain threshold. A few restaurants provide free meals or free entrees to qualifying veterans, though these are less common. The specifics vary considerably from one chain to another and even between individual locations of the same restaurant.

The mechanics of receiving the discount typically require presenting some form of military identification or documentation. This might include a military ID card, discharge papers (DD Form 214), a Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC), or other official military documentation. Some restaurants may ask to see these documents at the register before applying the discount to your bill. Others may simply ask you to state that you are a veteran. Policies differ across establishments, so calling ahead to ask what documentation they require can save time and confusion.

Timing matters when planning to use these discounts. While Veterans Day is November 11th, many restaurants extend their promotions for several days before and after the actual date. Some offer discounts for the entire week of Veterans Day, while others may only honor discounts on November 11th itself. A few major chains have extended their offers to cover the entire month of November. Checking with specific restaurants about their promotion dates ensures you know when you can use the discount.

Practical Takeaway: Before heading to a restaurant on or around Veterans Day, call ahead to confirm three things: whether they offer a military discount, what documentation you need to bring, and what dates the promotion runs.

Major Restaurant Chains That Offer Veterans Day Discounts

Numerous large restaurant chains participate in Veterans Day discount programs. These establishments range from casual dining chains to fast-casual restaurants and quick-service locations. Knowing which restaurants typically offer these discounts can help you plan your dining experience.

Applebee's has been a consistent participant in Veterans Day promotions for many years. They typically offer a free entree from a select menu to veterans on November 11th. Outback Steakhouse similarly provides a free meal to veterans during their promotional period, usually around Veterans Day. Red Robin offers a free premium burger and fries to veterans. Buffalo Wild Wings typically provides a discount on a purchase, often around 15 percent off, for military members and veterans. Chili's Bar and Grill has offered discounts that may include a percentage off the total bill.

In the fast-casual category, Chipotle Mexican Grill has historically offered discounts to veterans, though the specifics of their promotion can vary year to year. Panera Bread sometimes participates with discounts on purchases. Olive Garden occasionally offers promotions during Veterans Day week. Johnny Rockets and Cracker Barrel have both been known to offer veteran discounts around this time period. The Red Cross Café and various local chains also frequently participate.

It is important to note that restaurant promotions change from year to year. A restaurant that offered a discount in previous years might not participate one year, or might change the terms of their offer. Conversely, restaurants not previously offering discounts may decide to start. Some locations participate while others in the same chain do not, particularly smaller franchises. Major chains make corporate-level decisions about promotions, but individual franchise locations or regional restaurants operate independently.

The discount amounts and offerings vary significantly. Some restaurants advertise their promotions prominently weeks in advance, while others announce them closer to the date. The value you receive might range from $5 off a meal to a completely free entree worth $20 or more. Premium items and restrictions often apply—a free entree might not include premium proteins or the most expensive items on the menu.

Practical Takeaway: Create a list of 3-5 restaurants in your area that you enjoy, then visit their websites or call in early November to confirm their specific Veterans Day offers for the current year.

Regional and Local Restaurant Discounts

Beyond the national chains, thousands of regional and local restaurants throughout the United States honor veterans with discounts on or around Veterans Day. These establishments include steakhouses, seafood restaurants, family-owned diners, barbecue joints, ethnic cuisine establishments, and casual dining spots. Supporting local restaurants that offer military discounts can be particularly meaningful while also supporting your community.

Regional steakhouse chains in different parts of the country often have Veterans Day promotions. Texas Roadhouse, which operates primarily in the southern and central United States, has offered discounts to veterans. Local steakhouses in major cities frequently provide special offerings. Seafood restaurants, particularly on the coasts, often participate. A search for "Veterans Day restaurant discounts near me" or checking local business directories can reveal options specific to your area.

Family-owned restaurants represent a significant portion of participating establishments. These businesses, which may have been operated by the same family for decades, frequently honor veterans as a community gesture. Many were founded by veterans themselves or have family members who served. Local diners, pizza shops, barbecue restaurants, and ethnic cuisine establishments—whether specializing in Mexican, Italian, Asian, or other cuisines—often join the tradition.

The challenge with regional and local options is that information about their discounts may not be centralized online. Some small restaurants do not maintain active social media pages or updated websites. Discovering these offers often requires calling ahead or asking local residents. However, this localized approach means the discounts may be quite generous, since smaller establishments often have fewer customers than major chains and can afford more substantial offers.

Another benefit of using local restaurant discounts is that your money stays within your community. Small business owners often reinvest revenue locally, and the staff members at these establishments likely live nearby. Veterans dining at these locations often receive more personalized recognition and gratitude than they might at a large national chain.

Practical Takeaway: Ask veteran friends or family members which local restaurants they know offer Veterans Day discounts, and check Google Maps or Yelp for restaurants in your area with recent reviews mentioning military discounts.

What Documentation You Should Bring

Restaurants require documentation to verify veteran status before applying a discount. Understanding what documents are typically accepted helps ensure a smooth transaction when dining out. Different establishments may have slightly different requirements, but most recognize standard military identification and records.

A military ID card, formally known as a Uniformed Services Identification Card, is the most widely recognized form of documentation. This includes military dependent ID cards and retiree cards. If you still possess your military ID card, it is an excellent option. However, many veterans no longer have access to their military ID, particularly those who separated from service years or decades ago.

The Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, commonly called the DD Form 214, is an official government document provided to all service members upon separation or retirement. This form contains specific details about your military service, including dates of service, branch of service, and rank. Photocopies or electronic versions are generally accepted. You can obtain copies from the National Archives or through various online services that retrieve these records from government databases.

A Veterans Health Identification Card (VHIC) issued by the Department of Veterans Affairs serves as documentation of veteran status. Not all veterans have this card, as it must be requested and is typically associated with VA healthcare services. If you receive benefits through the VA, you may already have one.

Some restaurants also accept state-issued Veteran designation on driver's licenses. Many states now offer the option to add a veteran designation to your driver's license at no additional cost. This serves as everyday identification that indicates your military service status. The specific process varies by state.

Less commonly accepted but sometimes recognized are discharge papers, separation notices, military pay stubs or orders, or letters from the military confirming service. Some restaurants may accept a photo of your military ID if you cannot produce the original document.

Practical Takeaway: If you do not have a military ID card, obtain a copy of your DD Form 214 now rather than waiting until Veterans Day. Request it online from the National Archives or contact your branch's personnel records center. Having this single document makes it easy to use any veteran discounts throughout the year.
