The garage was founded by Richard Rawlings, who serves as the primary operator and public face of the business. Beyond the television show, Gas Monkey Garage functions as a full-service automotive shop offering restoration services, custom builds, and vehicle sales. The business has expanded its operations over the years and maintains multiple locations for different types of work. The garage employs skilled technicians, welders, painters, and other automotive specialists who work on various projects simultaneously.

Gas Monkey Garage has become a significant part of Dallas's automotive culture and attracts visitors from across the country who want to see the shop where the television show is filmed. The business model involves sourcing vehicles, typically classic cars or interesting modern vehicles, performing extensive restoration or customization work, and then reselling these vehicles at a profit. This model has proven successful enough to sustain the business for over a decade while maintaining a popular television presence.

Understanding the basic structure and purpose of Gas Monkey Garage helps clarify what the business actually does and how it operates. The garage is not a dealership in the traditional sense, though vehicles are sold to the public. It is primarily a restoration and customization shop that specializes in taking older or damaged vehicles and returning them to functional, often upgraded condition. The television series documents this process, showing viewers the challenges and solutions involved in automotive restoration work.

This might include engine upgrades, modern drivetrain swaps, custom paint jobs, interior redesigns, and performance enhancements. These builds are tailored to individual customer specifications and can take months or years depending on complexity. The garage works with customers to understand their vision and then executes the work using skilled craftspeople and specialized equipment.

The shop also handles mechanical repairs and maintenance for various vehicle types. The garage employs technicians certified in various automotive specialties to handle these services.

Paint and body work is a specialized service performed at Gas Monkey Garage. The shop has dedicated painters and body technicians who handle everything from minor touch-ups to complete paint jobs, dent removal, rust repair, and body panel fabrication. Custom paint designs, which may include specialty techniques like airbrushing or custom color matching, are available for those seeking distinctive finishes.

Vehicle sales represent an important component of Gas Monkey Garage's operations. The shop regularly lists completed restoration and custom projects for sale. These vehicles are typically priced based on the quality of work, market demand, and the vehicle's appeal to collectors or enthusiasts. Customers may purchase directly from the garage's inventory of available vehicles.

Understanding Restoration Project Timelines and Costs

Restoration projects at Gas Monkey Garage vary considerably in both timeline and cost depending on several factors. A basic mechanical restoration of a vehicle in relatively good condition might take several weeks to a few months. A complete frame-off restoration of a heavily damaged or extensively rusted classic car can easily take one to two years or longer. The television show demonstrates this reality through episodes showing different projects at various stages of completion.

Cost for restoration work depends on the vehicle's condition, desired level of restoration, parts availability, and the specific work required. A simple mechanical restoration might cost anywhere from five thousand to fifty thousand dollars depending on what needs repair. Complete restorations with custom work can easily exceed one hundred thousand dollars or more for premium vehicles or those requiring extensive work. Custom builds with modern engine swaps, complete interior redesigns, and specialty work can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Labor costs represent a significant portion of restoration expenses. Skilled automotive technicians, welders, and custom craftspeople command hourly rates reflecting their expertise and experience. A typical shop rate might range from seventy-five to one hundred fifty dollars per hour or more for specialized work. A project requiring five hundred hours of labor, which is not uncommon for substantial restoration work, represents a substantial cost component before parts are even considered.

Parts costs vary dramatically based on what is needed. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts for classic vehicles may be expensive or difficult to source, increasing both the time and cost involved. Modern replacement parts might be more affordable but may require modification for proper fitment on older vehicles. Specialty custom parts, fabricated components, or rare original parts can represent particularly large expenses.

Project timelines are affected by parts availability, the shop's current workload, the complexity of issues discovered during disassembly, and the owner's specific requirements. A shop with multiple projects running simultaneously must schedule work, and priorities may shift based on customer arrangements or project urgency. Owners should understand that timelines provided are estimates and
