What Is the Massachusetts Quest Card?
The Massachusetts Quest Card is a debit card issued by the state to people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Instead of paper coupons or vouchers, SNAP participants use this card to purchase food at grocery stores and other authorized retailers. The card works like a regular debit card—you swipe it at checkout, and the funds come from your SNAP account.

The Quest Card system has been operating in Massachusetts for over two decades. As of 2024, approximately 600,000 Massachusetts residents use SNAP benefits, and nearly all of them receive their benefits through a Quest Card. The card is produced and managed by Conduent, a payment processing company that handles Quest Cards for multiple states across the country.
When you receive SNAP benefits in Massachusetts, the money is loaded onto your Quest Card on the first of each month, or according to a staggered schedule depending on your case number. The card can be used immediately at any grocery store, supermarket, or food retailer that accepts SNAP benefits. The card displays your account balance, which you can check at ATM machines, through the phone system, or online through the Quest Card website.
One important thing to understand: the Quest Card itself is not a benefit—it is simply the tool that delivers your SNAP benefits to you. The card does not cost money, and you should never pay anyone to obtain or use one. If you receive SNAP benefits in Massachusetts, you will receive a Quest Card automatically by mail.
Practical Takeaway: The Quest Card is your access method to SNAP benefits in Massachusetts. Understanding how it works helps you manage your food budget and use your benefits correctly at stores.
Understanding Massachusetts SNAP Benefits
SNAP is a federal program that provides monthly food benefits to low-income individuals and families. In Massachusetts, SNAP is administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA). The program is designed to help people purchase nutritious food and is often referred to by its older name, food stamps.

The amount of SNAP benefits a person or household receives depends on several factors, including household size, income, and expenses. As of 2024, the average SNAP benefit in Massachusetts is approximately $260 per month for a single person, though amounts vary widely. A family of four might receive between $500 and $1,000 per month, depending on their specific circumstances.
SNAP benefits can only be used to purchase certain foods. Eligible items include fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, breads, cereals, and snacks. The program does not cover hot or prepared foods, alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medicines, pet food, or household supplies. This means you cannot use your Quest Card to buy cooked chicken from the deli counter, but you can buy a raw chicken to cook at home.
In Massachusetts, there are also special programs that add extra benefits. The Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) gives extra SNAP benefits when you purchase certain fresh fruits and vegetables at participating stores. Some communities also run Double Up programs that match your SNAP spending at farmers markets, so $10 in benefits becomes $20 in purchasing power.
To receive SNAP benefits in Massachusetts, you must meet income limits and other requirements set by federal law. These requirements change periodically. The Department of Transitional Assistance website contains current information about who may be able to receive benefits and what the income limits are.
Practical Takeaway: SNAP benefits are monthly food funds that come to you through your Quest Card. Knowing what you can and cannot buy helps you stretch your food budget and use your benefits wisely.
How to Obtain a Massachusetts Quest Card
If you currently receive SNAP benefits in Massachusetts, you should receive a Quest Card automatically by mail within two weeks of your benefits being approved. The card comes with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that you create during your first use. You do not need to request or order a Quest Card separately—it is provided as part of the SNAP benefit process.

When your Quest Card arrives, you will receive an envelope containing the card itself, a letter with instructions, and information about your account. Read the included materials carefully, as they explain how to activate your card and set up your PIN. You activate the card by either calling the phone number provided or using the online portal at the Quest Card website.
If you have already received SNAP benefits but never received a Quest Card, or if your card was lost or damaged, you can contact the Quest Card customer service line at 1-888-997-8378. This line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also request a replacement card through the Department of Transitional Assistance website. Replacement cards typically arrive within two weeks.
When you set up your PIN, choose a number that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Do not use your birthday, anniversary, or other dates that someone might know. Your PIN is how you protect your benefits from being used by someone else. If you forget your PIN, you can reset it by calling customer service or using the online portal.
It is important to protect your Quest Card the same way you would protect a regular debit card or credit card. Do not share your PIN with anyone, including family members or friends. Do not write your PIN on the card itself. If your card is lost or stolen, call customer service immediately so they can freeze your account and prevent unauthorized use.
Practical Takeaway: Your Quest Card comes automatically when you receive SNAP benefits. Protect it with a secure PIN and keep the card safe, just as you would with money.
Using Your Quest Card at Stores and Checking Your Balance
Using your Quest Card is straightforward and works much like using a regular debit card. When you shop at a grocery store or food retailer that takes SNAP benefits, you place your eligible food items on the conveyor belt at checkout. When the cashier is ready, you swipe your Quest Card through the card reader or give it to them to swipe. Enter your PIN on the keypad when prompted. The SNAP funds are deducted from your account, and the purchase is complete.

Many stores now offer self-checkout options where you can swipe your card yourself without speaking to a cashier. This can feel more private if you are concerned about others knowing you use SNAP. The process is identical—you swipe the card and enter your PIN. If you make a purchase that includes both eligible and ineligible items (for example, food and soap), the cashier will separate them, and only the eligible food items will be charged to your Quest Card.
It is a good idea to check your balance regularly so you know how much you have to spend. You can check your balance in several ways. Call 1-888-997-8378 and follow the voice prompts to hear your current balance. Visit www.mass.gov/quest to access your account online using your card number and PIN. Use an ATM machine—most ATMs allow you to check your balance for free. Ask a cashier at a store—they can tell you your balance when you make a purchase.
Keep track of your balance throughout the month so you can plan your shopping. Many people find it helpful to write down their balance in a notebook or take screenshots on their phone. This helps you avoid the embarrassment of trying to make a purchase and finding you do not have enough benefits left. Remember that benefits are loaded once a month, usually on the first of the month or according to a staggered schedule based on your case number.
If you notice unauthorized charges or suspect fraud, contact customer service right away. You may be able to dispute the charge and have those funds restored. Keep your receipt from every purchase so you can compare it to your account activity online.
Practical Takeaway: Swipe your card like a regular debit card at checkout, enter your PIN, and keep track of your balance. Check your balance regularly using the phone line, website, or ATM to stay aware of how much you have left to spend.
