How to Block Accounts on TikTok Guide

Understanding TikTok's Blocking Feature and How It Works

Blocking accounts on TikTok is a feature that lets you prevent specific users from interacting with you on the platform. When you block someone, they can no longer see your videos, send you messages, or find your profile through search. The blocked person will not receive a notification that you blocked them, though they may notice they can no longer access your profile if they try to visit it directly.

TikTok's blocking system operates differently from other features like muting or unfollowing. When you unfollow someone, they can still see your public videos and search for your profile. When you mute someone, their videos stop appearing in your "For You" page, but they remain connected to your account. Blocking, however, creates a complete separation between accounts. This distinction matters because your choice depends on what level of restriction you want to establish with another user.

The blocking feature exists to protect your privacy and create a safer experience on the platform. TikTok reports that the platform has over 1 billion monthly active users worldwide as of 2024. With such a large user base, tools for managing interactions become important for personal safety and comfort while using the app.

When you block someone, TikTok removes their ability to interact with your content in several ways. They cannot like your videos, comment on your posts, or send you direct messages. If they previously followed you, the follow connection is removed. Any previous comments or likes they made on your videos may still be visible in your video statistics, but they cannot create new interactions going forward.

Practical Takeaway: Before blocking someone, consider whether blocking is the right choice for your situation. If you simply want to reduce someone's content in your feed, muting may be sufficient. If you want to prevent all interaction with a specific person, blocking is the appropriate tool.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Blocking an Account

Blocking an account on TikTok can be accomplished through several methods, depending on where you encounter the account. The most common way is to block someone while viewing their profile or while looking at their video. Each method takes only a few seconds to complete.

To block someone from their profile, first navigate to their TikTok profile page. This can be done by searching for their username, clicking on their name from a comment or message, or selecting their profile from your followers or following list. Once on their profile page, look for the three-dot menu icon, typically located in the upper right corner of the screen. Tap this icon to open a menu with several options. Select "Block" from the available choices. A confirmation message will appear asking if you want to block this user. Confirm your choice by tapping the "Block" button in the confirmation window.

You can also block someone from their video. While watching any video from a user you want to block, tap the three-dot menu icon that appears on the right side of the screen. This opens a small menu with options including "Block user" or similar wording depending on your app version. Tap this option and confirm when prompted.

Another method involves blocking someone from your direct messages. Open your messages, find the conversation with the person you want to block, and tap and hold on their message or name. A menu will appear with options including "Block." Select this option and confirm the action.

The blocking process works the same way whether you are using TikTok on iOS, Android, or through the web version. The interface may look slightly different on different devices, but the general steps remain consistent. After you complete the blocking process, you will be returned to the previous screen, and the block will be active immediately.

Practical Takeaway: Write down the username of anyone you plan to block before you block them. After blocking, you won't be able to see their profile easily, so having their username recorded can be useful if you need to unblock them in the future.

What Happens After You Block Someone

Once you block an account, several changes happen immediately on both your experience and the blocked person's experience. Understanding these changes can help you feel confident about your blocking decision and know what to expect going forward.

From your perspective, the blocked user's profile becomes inaccessible. If you try to search for their username after blocking them, their profile will not appear in search results. If you had previously saved any of their videos or shared them, those saved items will remain in your saved folder, but the links to the original videos may not work properly. Any comments the blocked person made on your previous videos will still be visible, though they cannot add new comments.

The blocked person experiences several limitations when they try to interact with your account. They cannot visit your profile by searching for you. If they try to visit your profile through a direct link, they will see a message indicating they cannot view the profile. They cannot watch your videos, which means your content is completely hidden from them. They cannot like, comment, or share your videos. Any direct messages you previously sent to them will still be visible in their message history, but they cannot send you new messages or start a new conversation with you.

It's important to note that blocking does not delete past interactions entirely. If the blocked person had previously commented on your videos before you blocked them, those comments remain visible to other users. However, if the blocked person clicks on their own comment, they will not be able to see your video anymore. Similarly, if you previously liked or commented on their content before blocking them, those interactions remain visible to others, but you cannot interact further.

TikTok does not notify users when they are blocked. The blocked person will not receive a message or notification saying they have been blocked. However, they may realize they have been blocked if they try to visit your profile and see an error message, or if they notice they can no longer find you through search when they previously could.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that blocking someone does not erase your shared history on the platform. If you are concerned about specific past comments or interactions, consider reviewing your content and making any necessary changes before or after blocking the person.

Managing Multiple Blocks and Your Block List

If you block multiple accounts over time, TikTok provides a way for you to view and manage all of your blocks in one location. This block list feature lets you see who you have blocked and allows you to unblock accounts if you change your mind.

To view your block list, open the TikTok app and go to your profile by tapping the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen. Tap the three-line menu icon in the upper right corner to open your settings. Scroll down and select "Privacy and safety." Within this section, you will find an option labeled "Blocked accounts" or "Blocked users." Tap this option to see a complete list of all accounts you currently have blocked.

Your block list displays the username and profile picture of each blocked account. The list is typically organized in reverse chronological order, meaning the most recently blocked accounts appear first. You can scroll through this list to review all of your blocks.

If you want to unblock someone, simply tap on their name or profile in the block list. A menu will appear with an "Unblock" option. Select this option and confirm when prompted. Once you unblock someone, all restrictions are removed, and that person can interact with your account again just as they could before being blocked.

There is no limit to how many accounts you can block on TikTok. The platform does not restrict the number of blocks you can create. Some users with large followings or those who experience harassment may have dozens or even hundreds of blocked accounts. TikTok's block list can accommodate this.

Managing your block list periodically can help you keep track of your blocks. Some people prefer to review their blocked accounts quarterly to see if they still want to maintain all of their blocks. Circumstances change, and people may decide they want to unblock someone they previously blocked.

Practical Takeaway: Check your block list regularly to review who you have blocked. This practice helps you maintain an accurate list of blocks that match your current comfort level on the platform.
