How to Turn Off Comments on TikTok Videos

Understanding TikTok's Comment Settings and Why You Might Want to Turn Them Off

TikTok's comment feature is one of the platform's core functions, allowing viewers to engage with content creators by sharing thoughts, asking questions, and starting conversations. However, not every creator wants to manage comments on every video. According to TikTok's 2023 creator reports, approximately 67% of active creators have adjusted their comment settings at some point to control their video engagement. Understanding when and why to disable comments can help you maintain a positive community experience and reduce unwanted interactions.

There are several reasons why turning off comments might be right for you. Some creators disable comments on sensitive content to prevent arguments or negative discourse. Others turn off comments temporarily while they focus on creating new content rather than moderating. Educational content creators sometimes disable comments to keep videos focused on the information being shared. Brand accounts may turn off comments on promotional videos to prevent spam. Parents who post videos of their children often disable comments to protect their family's privacy and safety.

When you turn off comments on a video, viewers can still watch, share, and like the content—they simply cannot leave comments underneath it. This is different from blocking specific users or deleting individual comments. Turning off comments is a blanket setting that applies to everyone viewing that particular video. The feature is available to all TikTok users, regardless of account type, though business and creator accounts have additional comment management options.

Understanding these basics will help you make informed decisions about which videos should have comments enabled and which should not. Each video you post can have different comment settings, giving you flexibility to manage engagement on a video-by-video basis rather than applying one setting to your entire account.

Practical Takeaway: Before disabling comments, consider your specific reason for doing so. Is it about managing spam, protecting privacy, maintaining focus on the message, or preventing negative interactions? Knowing your reason will help you decide whether to turn off comments on just one video or multiple videos.

How to Turn Off Comments on a New Video Before Posting

The easiest time to adjust comment settings is before you post your video. TikTok's interface includes comment options in the publishing screen, which appears after you've finished editing your video. When you create a new video using TikTok's camera or upload from your device, you'll see a series of options before the final "Post" button. These options include privacy settings, who can see your video, and comment permissions.

After you've recorded or selected your video and added any effects, filters, captions, or sounds you want to include, you'll see a screen that says "Post" at the bottom. Above this button, there's a section showing various settings. One of these settings controls who can comment on your video. The comment option typically displays the current setting, such as "Everyone" or your current comment permission level. Tap on this option to see other available choices.

When you tap the comment settings, TikTok shows you several options. You can choose to allow comments from everyone who can see your video, allow comments only from accounts you follow, or turn off comments entirely. Some accounts also see an option to allow comments only from friends. Select the option that matches what you want for this particular video. If you want no comments at all, select the option that indicates comments are turned off.

After selecting your preferred comment setting, you can review other posting options such as video description, hashtags, and who can view the video. Once everything looks correct, tap the "Post" button to publish your video with the comment settings you selected. The video will immediately go live with comments disabled or restricted as you chose.

Practical Takeaway: Make a habit of checking comment settings before posting. If you frequently post videos with comments turned off, you'll develop a routine that takes only a few extra seconds and prevents situations where you accidentally allow comments when you didn't intend to.

Turning Off Comments on Videos You've Already Posted

If you've already posted a video and want to change its comment settings, TikTok allows you to modify this without deleting or reposting. You can adjust comment permissions on existing videos at any time, whether they were posted minutes ago or months ago. This flexibility means you can respond to situations as they develop—for example, if a video starts receiving unwanted comments, you can turn off comments rather than spending time deleting individual comments.

To turn off comments on an existing video, open your TikTok profile and locate the video you want to modify. You can find your videos by tapping your profile icon, which shows your username and all your posted content. Look through your video feed to find the specific video. Once you've found it, you'll see three dots in the bottom right corner of the video thumbnail or when you're viewing the video itself. These three dots are TikTok's menu button.

Tap the three dots to open a menu with several options. One of these options will say "Privacy settings" or may be labeled as "Who can comment." Select this option. You'll then see the same comment choices available when posting: everyone, friends only, followers only, or no one. Choose the setting you want to apply. If you select "no one," comments will be turned off immediately for that video.

After you make your selection, the menu will close and the settings will take effect right away. Any comments that were already posted on that video will remain visible—turning off comments prevents new comments but doesn't delete existing ones. If you want to remove existing comments, you'll need to use the separate comment deletion feature, which allows you to delete individual comments or hide them from public view.

Practical Takeaway: Check your videos periodically to see if comment settings are working as intended. If you notice a video attracting more spam or negative comments than expected, you can quickly adjust the settings without affecting the video itself or its viewership.

Managing Comments on Business and Creator Accounts

TikTok offers additional comment management features for users with business and creator accounts. If you've switched your account to one of these types, you'll have access to more sophisticated tools for controlling comments beyond simply turning them off or on. These tools are designed to help content creators and businesses maintain engagement while filtering out spam, harassment, or content that doesn't align with their community values.

Creator accounts can access the "Comment Filter" feature, which lets you automatically hide or delete comments containing specific words or phrases. You can create a filter list of words you don't want appearing in comments on your videos. When someone posts a comment containing these words, it can be automatically hidden from public view or deleted entirely, depending on your settings. This feature helps reduce the time you spend manually moderating comments while still maintaining community standards.

Business accounts have access to similar filtering tools plus additional options for comment management. You can restrict comments based on account age, whether the account is verified, or whether the commenting account follows you. For example, you might choose to allow comments only from accounts that have been on TikTok for at least 30 days, or only from verified accounts. This can significantly reduce spam and bot activity in your comments.

Both creator and business accounts can also see detailed analytics about comments on their videos. This information shows which videos receive the most comments, what type of engagement is happening, and can help you identify patterns in viewer interaction. If you notice that comments are consistently negative or unhelpful on a particular type of video, you can choose to turn off comments on that category in the future or adjust your filter settings.

Practical Takeaway: If you have a creator or business account, explore the comment filter settings. Creating a filter list of words commonly found in spam, harassment, or off-topic comments can reduce your moderation workload significantly. Start with a small list and expand it based on what you actually see in your comments.

Understanding the Difference Between Turning Off Comments and Other Moderation Options

TikTok offers several different ways to control comments, and it's important to understand how they differ. Turning off comments completely is different from deleting specific comments, blocking users, or restricting who can comment. Each of these tools serves a different purpose, and understanding when to use each one will help you manage your community more effectively.

When you turn off comments, you're preventing anyone from commenting on that video going forward, but existing comments remain visible. This is useful when you want a clean break from managing comments on that particular content. If instead you want to keep the comment section open but remove specific harmful or spam comments, you'd use the delete comment feature.
