Learn About Cessna Citation Latitude Ownership Costs

Understanding the Cessna Citation Latitude: Aircraft Overview and Market Position

The Cessna Citation Latitude is a mid-size business jet manufactured by Textron Aviation. Introduced in 2015, this aircraft has become a popular choice among business owners, charter operators, and flight departments worldwide. The aircraft seats up to nine passengers in typical configurations and offers a range of approximately 2,700 nautical miles, making it suitable for cross-country flights without refueling stops.

The Citation Latitude measures 60 feet in length with a cabin width of 7.4 feet, providing considerable space compared to smaller light jets. It features two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306D1 turbofan engines, each producing 3,970 pounds of thrust. These engines deliver strong performance while maintaining reasonable fuel efficiency for an aircraft in this category. The aircraft cruises at approximately 500 miles per hour at optimal altitudes.

When considering ownership, understanding the aircraft's capabilities and market position helps frame the financial discussion. The Citation Latitude competes with aircraft like the Bombardier Learjet 75 and Embraer Phenom 300E. Its market value has remained relatively stable, with pre-owned examples ranging from approximately $8 million to $12 million depending on age, flight hours, and condition. New aircraft from the factory list around $14 million to $15 million before customization options.

The aircraft has maintained strong appeal in the pre-owned market, with typical listing prices reflecting depreciation patterns common to business aircraft. A ten-year-old Latitude with moderate flight hours typically sells for 50-60% of its original purchase price. This relatively stable depreciation pattern makes financial planning more predictable for potential owners.

Practical Takeaway: Research current market listings and recent sales data for Citation Latitudes to understand pricing trends in your region. Compare specifications with competing mid-size jets to confirm the aircraft meets your mission requirements before evaluating ownership costs.

Direct Operating Costs: Fuel, Engine Maintenance, and Consumables

Direct operating costs (DOC) represent the expenses that increase with every flight hour. For the Citation Latitude, fuel consumption is the largest component of direct operating costs. The aircraft burns approximately 150-170 gallons per hour during cruise, depending on altitude, weight, and flight profile. At current Jet A fuel prices ranging from $4.50 to $6.50 per gallon (prices fluctuate based on market conditions and location), fuel costs run approximately $675 to $1,105 per flight hour.

Engine maintenance represents the second major direct operating cost. Cessna and industry sources indicate engine reserves should be calculated at approximately $1,000 to $1,400 per flight hour for the PW306D1 engines. This reserve accounts for scheduled maintenance, unscheduled repairs, and eventual engine overhaul or replacement. A comprehensive engine overhaul, conducted every 5,000 to 5,500 flight hours, costs between $1.2 million and $1.8 million per engine, or $2.4 million to $3.6 million for the aircraft's two engines.

Beyond fuel and engines, direct operating costs include other consumable items and routine maintenance. These costs typically add $300 to $500 per flight hour and cover items such as hydraulic fluid, engine oil, filters, tire replacements, and routine inspections. Landing fees, handling charges, and parking fees vary by location but generally add $500 to $2,000 per flight, depending on the airport and duration of stay.

Pilots and crew represent another significant hourly operating expense. A single pilot can operate the Citation Latitude, but many owners employ two pilots for safety and regulatory compliance on longer flights. Pilot salaries, taxes, and benefits typically range from $120,000 to $200,000 annually per pilot, translating to approximately $60 to $100 per flight hour when divided across annual flight activity.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate your anticipated annual flight hours, multiply by estimated direct operating costs of $2,400 to $3,500 per hour, and add estimated crew costs to project your annual operating expenses. Compare this to charter costs in your market to determine if ownership offers financial advantages for your mission profile.

Fixed Ownership Costs: Hangarage, Insurance, and Crew Salaries

Fixed ownership costs occur regardless of how many hours you fly the aircraft. Hangarage represents one of the most significant fixed expenses. Depending on location and facility type, indoor hangar space for a Citation Latitude ranges from $2,000 to $6,000 per month. Premium facilities offering heated hangars, maintenance bays, and full amenities may charge toward the higher end. Outdoor parking costs substantially less, typically $500 to $1,500 monthly, but exposes the aircraft to weather and may increase maintenance requirements.

Insurance for a mid-size business jet like the Citation Latitude typically costs 0.8% to 1.5% of the aircraft's hull value annually. For an aircraft valued at $10 million, this translates to $80,000 to $150,000 per year. Insurance premiums vary based on pilot experience, mission profile, annual flight hours, and claims history. Owners with lower flight hours and less experienced pilots typically pay higher premiums. Some owners budget $100,000 annually as a reasonable estimate for hull and liability coverage.

Crew salaries for permanent employees represent substantial fixed costs. A single pilot typically earns $80,000 to $150,000 annually, while a two-pilot crew costs $160,000 to $300,000 or more in combined salaries and benefits. These costs continue throughout the year regardless of flight activity. Some owners reduce this expense by hiring part-time or contract pilots, but this approach requires careful planning to ensure regulatory compliance and crew availability for mission needs.

Additional fixed costs include annual inspections, avionics maintenance subscriptions, database updates for navigation systems, and various regulatory compliance items. Annual inspections can cost $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the aircraft's condition and maintenance history. Avionics subscriptions for current charts and weather information add $3,000 to $8,000 annually. Emergency locator transmitter batteries and oxygen system certifications add several thousand dollars more annually.

Practical Takeaway: Create a spreadsheet listing all potential fixed costs for one year. Include hangar rental, insurance, crew salaries, and inspections. Most owners find fixed costs total $250,000 to $450,000 annually before flying a single hour. Compare this baseline to your budget before committing to ownership.

Capital Costs: Purchase Price, Customization, and Depreciation

The purchase price represents the largest capital expenditure in aircraft ownership. New Citation Latitude aircraft from the factory cost approximately $14 million to $15 million for the base model. Buyers typically add avionics upgrades, interior customizations, and optional equipment that increase the final price to $15 million to $17 million or higher. Pre-owned examples cost significantly less, with typical asking prices ranging from $8 million to $12 million depending on year of manufacture, flight hours, maintenance history, and condition.

Customization costs for new aircraft can be substantial. Upgrading from the standard interior to premium leather, updated cabin management systems, and enhanced lighting systems typically adds $500,000 to $1.5 million. Advanced avionics packages including enhanced weather radar and additional autopilot capabilities add $200,000 to $600,000. Specialty modifications for specific mission requirements, such as high-altitude medical equipment or enhanced communication systems, add further expense.

Depreciation patterns for Citation Latitudes have proven relatively stable compared to some aircraft categories. A new aircraft typically depreciates to approximately 60-65% of its original value after 10 years of operation with average flight hours. This depreciation pattern varies based on overall market conditions, fuel prices, and economic factors affecting business aviation demand. Aircraft with higher-than-average flight hours or deferred maintenance depreciate more steeply.

Buyers should also budget for pre-purchase inspections when acquiring used aircraft. A thorough pre-purchase inspection, conducted by qualified mechanics and specialists, costs $15,000 to $40,000 but identifies potential maintenance issues and negotiation points. This investment often pays for itself through price reductions or identified repairs needed before purchase. Additionally, registering the aircraft and obtaining an airworthiness certificate requires FAA filings with associated
