Learn About Hertz Certified Used Car Options

Understanding Hertz Certified Used Cars

Hertz Certified Used Cars represent vehicles that have gone through a structured inspection and reconditioning process. Unlike regular used cars sold by private sellers or some dealerships, Hertz certified vehicles come with documentation showing their history and the work completed before sale. Hertz, as one of the largest car rental companies in the United States, sells off vehicles from their rental fleet after they reach a certain mileage threshold, typically between 25,000 and 50,000 miles depending on the vehicle type and model year.

The Hertz Certified Used Car program began as a way to provide transparency to consumers purchasing rental fleet vehicles. These cars have detailed service records since they were maintained according to strict corporate standards while in the rental fleet. Every vehicle in the program undergoes a multi-point inspection before receiving certified status. This inspection includes checks of the engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, and interior components.

One key aspect of Hertz Certified vehicles is their relative uniformity in condition. Since rental cars receive regular maintenance schedules and are serviced at authorized facilities, they typically show more consistent wear patterns compared to privately owned vehicles. The mileage is usually highway miles accumulated during normal rental use, which can mean less wear on certain components than city driving.

Hertz sells these certified used vehicles through their own Car Sales division, which operates independently from their rental operations. The program includes vehicles from various manufacturers including Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, and others. Most certified vehicles are between one and four years old at the time of sale.

Practical Takeaway: Hertz Certified Used Cars are former rental fleet vehicles that have been inspected and documented. Understanding this background helps you evaluate whether this type of purchase aligns with your needs and budget considerations.

The Inspection and Certification Process

When a vehicle enters the Hertz Certified Used Car program, it goes through a thorough inspection process that typically takes several days to complete. Trained technicians examine over 125 different points on each vehicle, creating a detailed report of the vehicle's condition. This multi-point inspection covers all major systems and components, providing a baseline understanding of the car's current state.

The inspection process begins with a complete vehicle history report pulled from the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) and Carfax or AutoCheck. This report reveals any previous accidents, title issues, service records, and ownership history. Technicians then perform a physical inspection that includes testing the engine compression, checking fluid levels and condition, examining the transmission, inspecting brakes and rotors, checking suspension components, testing all electrical systems, and examining the interior for wear and damage.

If issues are identified during inspection, Hertz has several options. Minor issues may result in the vehicle not receiving certification status. More significant problems trigger repair work before certification. Common repairs performed include brake pad and rotor replacement, fluid changes, filter replacements, worn wiper blade replacement, and repairs to failed electrical components. Major issues such as engine problems or transmission concerns might result in the vehicle being excluded from the certified program entirely.

The certification document provided with these vehicles outlines which components have been inspected and their condition. This creates a paper trail showing what was functioning properly at the time of sale. Some Hertz locations provide printouts of the complete inspection checklist to buyers, while others may provide summary documents. This documentation becomes valuable if questions arise about the vehicle's condition shortly after purchase.

Practical Takeaway: The certification process involves a documented inspection of over 125 vehicle components. Requesting and reviewing the complete inspection report before purchase provides transparency about the vehicle's condition at the time of certification.

Pricing and Comparison to Other Used Car Options

Hertz Certified Used Cars typically fall in the mid-range of used car pricing within their category. A 2021 Honda Civic with 35,000 miles, for example, might be priced between $18,000 and $22,000 depending on trim level and condition, with Hertz certified examples often toward the middle or slightly higher end of this range. Comparable vehicles from private sellers might price lower due to lack of certification documentation, while examples from traditional used car dealerships could be priced similarly or slightly higher.

The pricing structure reflects several factors. First, the inspection and certification process involves labor costs that dealerships pass along to consumers. Second, Hertz offers vehicles with complete service history documentation, which adds value compared to private sales where service records may be incomplete or missing. Third, many Hertz locations offer limited warranties on certified vehicles, though the length and coverage vary by location and vehicle age. Some vehicles come with 30-day or 60-day warranties, while others may have up to one year depending on the model year and mileage.

When comparing prices, consider the following cost elements: warranty coverage (if included), documentation value, known service history, recent reconditioning work (which reduces immediate repair costs), and the reputation of the selling entity. A vehicle that costs $1,000 more than a private sale but includes a three-month warranty and documentation of recent brake work might represent better value if it prevents unexpected repair expenses.

According to data from various automotive pricing services, certified pre-owned vehicles from major rental companies typically sell for 5-15% more than identical uncertified vehicles from private sellers, but often 5-10% less than certified pre-owned vehicles from manufacturer-backed programs like Toyota CPO or Ford Certified Pre-Owned. This pricing reflects the middle ground between no certification and manufacturer certification.

Practical Takeaway: Hertz Certified vehicles generally price between private sales and traditional dealer inventory. Compare the specific warranty offered, service documentation provided, and recent repairs completed to determine if the price premium provides value for your situation.

Available Inventory and Vehicle Selection

Hertz Car Sales locations stock a variety of makes and models from their rental fleet, with inventory varying significantly by location and time of year. Common vehicles include Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, and various SUVs and trucks from major manufacturers. The specific models available depend on which vehicles Hertz rents most frequently in each region, as these are the vehicles that enter their used car sales channel most regularly.

The inventory turnover at Hertz Car Sales locations can be relatively quick compared to traditional used car lots. Vehicles in good condition tend to sell within weeks of being placed on the lot. This means that popular models may have limited selection at any given time, while less common configurations or less desirable colors might remain in inventory longer. Customers shopping for specific needs may need to check multiple nearby locations or contact Hertz Car Sales to locate a particular model and configuration.

Most Hertz Car Sales locations maintain online inventory lists showing vehicle details including year, mileage, color, trim level, price, and sometimes the inspection report highlights. These online listings allow customers to research options before visiting a dealership. Customers can also call Hertz Car Sales locations to ask about specific models or arrange to visit locations outside their immediate area to view particular vehicles.

The typical age of vehicles in the certified program ranges from one to four years old, with most vehicles being two to three years old at the time of sale. This age range means buyers have access to relatively modern vehicles with current technology and safety features, while the vehicles are still young enough to have significant remaining useful life. However, unlike brand-new cars, these vehicles are past their steepest depreciation curve, which can provide better value retention for the buyer.

Practical Takeaway: Hertz Car Sales locations stock mostly common rental fleet models with inventory that varies by location. Checking online inventory first and contacting specific locations about desired vehicles can help narrow your search to available options.

Warranty Coverage and After-Sale Support

Warranty terms for Hertz Certified Used Cars vary depending on the specific vehicle, its age, and mileage at the time of sale. Many Hertz locations offer limited warranties ranging from 30 days to one year on powertrain and other major components. Some vehicles, particularly those that are newer and lower mileage, may come with longer warranty periods. It is important to ask about warranty specifics before purchase, as these terms directly affect your financial risk after buying the vehicle.
