What Valley Fever Is and How It Spreads

Valley fever, also called coccidioidomycosis, is a lung infection caused by a fungus found in soil. The fungus lives in parts of the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. It also exists in parts of Mexico and Central America. When soil containing the fungus gets disturbed—such as during construction, farming, or dust storms—the fungal spores become airborne. People who breathe in these spores may develop the infection.

The fungus responsible for valley fever is called Coccidioides. It thrives in hot, dry climates with minimal rainfall. Climate studies suggest that as temperatures rise and drought patterns shift, the geographic range where this fungus lives may expand. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), valley fever cases have been increasing over the past two decades. In 2011, approximately 22,000 cases were reported across the United States. By recent years, this number had grown significantly.

When someone inhales the fungal spores, the infection typically affects the lungs first. Most people who breathe in the spores do not become sick—the CDC estimates that only about 40 percent of people exposed to the fungus develop symptoms. However, for those who do get sick, symptoms usually appear between one and three weeks after exposure. Early symptoms resemble the flu: cough, fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

The disease spreads through breathing contaminated air, not through contact with other people. You cannot catch valley fever from someone else who has it. This distinction is important because it means that people with valley fever do not need to be isolated from their family members or coworkers to prevent transmission. The only way to contract the infection is by breathing in spores directly from the environment.

Practical Takeaway: Valley fever is a fungal lung infection spread through breathing contaminated dust, primarily in the southwestern United States. Understanding how it spreads helps clarify what activities and conditions increase exposure risk.

Geographic Areas and Risk Zones

Valley fever occurs in specific geographic regions where the fungus naturally lives in soil. The highest concentration of cases occurs in Arizona and California. Arizona accounts for roughly 60 percent of all reported valley fever cases nationwide. In California, most cases come from the San Joaquin Valley region, which is why the disease earned its common name. However, risk exists in other southwestern states as well.

Within high-risk areas, certain locations pose greater exposure risks than others. Construction sites are particularly hazardous because excavation and ground disturbance release spores into the air. Agricultural areas where soil is tilled for farming create similar risks. Mining operations expose workers to large amounts of disturbed soil. Military installations in Arizona and California have documented valley fever outbreaks among personnel. Archeological dig sites and other activities involving ground excavation also increase exposure risk significantly.

Recent studies show that valley fever cases are not confined to traditional high-risk zones. People traveling to Arizona or California can contract the infection, even if they live in states where the fungus does not naturally occur. Some individuals develop symptoms weeks after traveling to endemic areas, making it difficult to connect their illness to exposure. The CDC has documented valley fever cases in all 50 states, though the vast majority involve people with ties to southwestern regions or travel history.

Climate and weather patterns influence fungus distribution and spore release. Severe droughts followed by heavy rainfall create ideal conditions for spore production and release. Dust storms called haboobs, common in Arizona, can transport spores across wide areas. Construction during dry seasons poses higher risks than construction during wet months. Understanding local weather patterns and soil conditions helps identify when and where exposure risks are highest.

Practical Takeaway: Valley fever risk concentrates in Arizona, California, and other southwestern states, but specific locations within these areas—particularly construction sites and disturbed soil areas—carry the highest exposure risks. Travel to these regions warrants awareness of local conditions.

Who Is Most Vulnerable to Valley Fever

Certain groups of people face higher risks of developing severe valley fever or complications from infection. Age plays a significant role in risk levels. Adults aged 60 and older have higher rates of severe disease. Children under five years old also face increased risks. During pregnancy, women experience a higher risk of developing severe valley fever, particularly during the second and third trimesters. Immunosuppressed individuals—those with weakened immune systems due to HIV/AIDS, organ transplantation, or certain medications—face the most serious risks.

Occupational exposure significantly increases valley fever risk. Construction workers in southwestern states have documented higher infection rates than the general population. Farm workers who handle soil experience frequent exposure. Mining workers, particularly those in California and Arizona, have occupational exposure risks. Military personnel stationed in affected areas, especially those involved in field exercises or construction projects, encounter elevated risks. Archeologists and other professionals who work with soil in endemic areas should be aware of their exposure potential.

Racial and ethnic disparities in valley fever cases suggest that some populations may be more susceptible to severe disease. Native Americans, particularly those of Filipino descent, and people of African descent have higher rates of severe valley fever. Hispanic populations also show higher rates of severe disease. These differences may relate to genetic factors, vitamin D levels, or other biological factors that affect immune response. However, anyone exposed to the fungus can contract the infection, regardless of race or ethnicity.

People with certain medical conditions face higher risks of complications. Individuals with chronic lung diseases like emphysema or asthma may develop more severe symptoms. People with diabetes have higher risks of complications. Those with compromised immune systems due to medical conditions or immunosuppressive medications face the greatest danger. Previous exposure and immunity status also matter—if someone had valley fever in the past, they typically develop lifelong immunity and will not get the infection again.

Practical Takeaway: Older adults, young children, pregnant women, immunosuppressed individuals, and certain occupational groups face higher risks. Understanding your personal risk category helps determine what precautions may be most relevant to your situation.

Practical Steps to Reduce Valley Fever Exposure

Reducing exposure to valley fever fungus involves minimizing the amount of dust and soil particles you breathe. For people living in or visiting southwestern areas where the fungus exists, several practical strategies can lower risk. Keep windows and doors closed during dust storms or when windy conditions stir up soil. When dust is visible outside, staying indoors provides significant protection. Air conditioning with clean filters helps keep indoor air free of contaminated dust. Maintaining indoor air filters and changing them regularly improves air quality.

Proper use of respiratory protection provides effective exposure reduction in high-risk situations. N95 respirators or similar masks can filter out fungal spores when worn correctly. However, masks must fit properly to be effective—loose-fitting masks provide minimal protection. People working in construction, farming, or mining in endemic areas should receive training on proper mask use and maintenance. Employers in high-risk industries should provide appropriate respiratory protection and training on its proper use.

Occupational exposure reduction requires specific workplace measures. Construction companies should use dust suppression methods such as water spray systems when excavating soil. Damp soil disturbs more easily than dry soil, which means watering work areas can reduce spore release. Employees should receive information about valley fever symptoms and know when to seek medical care. Establishing reporting systems for illness related to work exposure helps identify outbreaks early. Employers in endemic areas should consider implementing these measures as standard practice.

Outdoor activity modifications can reduce exposure during high-risk periods. Avoid outdoor activities during dust storms. Limit time in dusty areas, particularly during construction or excavation. When spending time outdoors in affected areas, some people choose to wear masks during particularly dusty conditions. Washing clothes and showering after outdoor exposure removes dust that may contain spores. Closing car windows while driving through dusty areas reduces the amount of contaminated air entering your vehicle.

Practical Takeaway: Simple measures like keeping windows closed during dust storms, using properly fitted N95 masks in high-exposure situations, and employing workplace dust suppression methods significantly reduce valley fever exposure risk.

Recognizing Valley Fever Symptoms and When to Seek Care

Early recognition of valley fever symptoms is important because prompt medical evaluation can lead to faster diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms typically appear one to three weeks after exposure to the fungus, though some people may not develop symptoms until four weeks after exposure. Initial symptoms closely resemble common respiratory infections. People often
