Learn How Costco Car Buying Service Works

What Is Costco's Car Buying Service and How It Operates

Costco's car buying service is a membership benefit that connects Costco members with dealerships throughout the United States. The service does not sell cars directly but instead works as an intermediary that has negotiated pricing agreements with participating Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis dealerships. This program, called Costco Auto Program, has been operating since 1992 and currently works with thousands of dealerships across North America.

The service functions by establishing predetermined pricing on new vehicles before members visit a dealership. When a member uses the program, they receive a quote that reflects a negotiated price that Costco has arranged with participating dealers. The member then takes this information to a participating dealership, where they can proceed with a purchase at that predetermined price point. The dealership handles all aspects of the transaction, financing, and paperwork directly with the buyer.

Costco does not profit from car sales through markups or commissions. Instead, the program exists as a member benefit that Costco offers as part of its membership package. The dealerships participate because the program generates customer traffic and volume sales. This structure means that the pricing information Costco provides reflects prices that dealers have agreed to offer through the program.

The program operates both online and through the dealership network. Members can view pricing information through Costco's website or visit a dealership directly. The service covers new vehicles from participating manufacturers and does not include used cars, certified pre-owned vehicles, or trucks from certain manufacturers.

Takeaway: Understanding that Costco's car buying service is a pricing arrangement rather than a direct sales service helps members know what to expect when they begin the process. The service provides negotiated pricing information that members can use when visiting dealerships to purchase vehicles.

How to Access and Navigate the Costco Auto Program

Accessing the Costco Auto Program requires an active Costco membership. Members can begin the process through multiple pathways. The primary method involves visiting Costco.com and locating the Auto Program section within the member benefits area. The website displays a searchable inventory of vehicles from manufacturers that participate in the program, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.

When browsing vehicles on the Costco Auto Program website, members can search by vehicle type, model, year, and location. The interface shows available inventory at nearby dealerships that participate in the program. Members can filter results based on their preferences, such as vehicle size, fuel type, and color. Once a member identifies a vehicle of interest, the website displays the Costco negotiated price for that specific vehicle at participating dealerships in their area.

The pricing information shown on the website typically includes the Costco member price, which represents the predetermined negotiated amount. This price is separate from financing offers, warranty options, and trade-in values, which are handled between the member and the dealership. The website also provides information about dealership locations, hours of operation, and contact details for dealerships participating in the program.

Members can also contact Costco's Auto Program team through the website for additional information. Phone support is available during business hours to answer questions about pricing, vehicle availability, and the process for completing a purchase. Some members may receive information about the program through Costco's member magazine or in-warehouse notices, though the online portal remains the primary resource for current pricing and inventory.

Takeaway: The Costco Auto Program website serves as the main tool for researching pricing and finding participating dealerships. Taking time to explore the available vehicles and pricing information before visiting a dealership allows members to make informed decisions about which vehicles and dealerships fit their needs.

Understanding Costco Auto Program Pricing Structure

The pricing displayed through the Costco Auto Program represents what Costco has negotiated with participating dealerships. This negotiated price is not the final price that a member will pay, as other factors affect the total cost of a vehicle purchase. Understanding what is and is not included in the displayed price helps members prepare for their dealership visit.

The Costco member price shown on the website typically reflects the vehicle's base price with any factory incentives that apply included in the calculation. This price does not include destination charges, which are fees that manufacturers charge for delivering vehicles to dealerships. Destination charges vary by manufacturer and typically range from $800 to $1,200 depending on the vehicle type and location. Members should expect to pay this charge on top of the negotiated price.

Sales tax and registration fees are separate from the Costco negotiated price. These costs vary by state and locality and are based on the vehicle's final sale price. Some states charge sales tax on the full purchase price, while others may have different calculations. Registration and title fees are determined by each state's Department of Motor Vehicles and also vary by location.

The pricing also does not include dealer add-ons such as extended warranties, paint protection, fabric protection, gap insurance, or other optional services that dealerships may offer. These are optional items that members may choose to add or decline. The Costco negotiated price represents only the vehicle itself and manufacturer-provided destination charges. Members should be aware that when visiting a dealership, additional options and services will be discussed separately from the negotiated price.

Trade-in values are handled separately from the Costco pricing. If a member is trading in an existing vehicle, the dealership will appraise that vehicle and provide a separate trade-in value. This value is subtracted from the total purchase price to determine the amount the member owes or finances.

Takeaway: Separating the Costco negotiated price from other costs such as taxes, fees, and optional services helps members budget accurately for their vehicle purchase. Knowing what components make up the final price prevents surprises during the purchase process.

The Step-by-Step Process of Purchasing Through Costco Auto Program

The purchase process through the Costco Auto Program begins with research and selection on the program's website. After identifying a vehicle of interest and noting the Costco member price and participating dealership location, the member contacts the dealership to schedule an appointment. While not always required, calling ahead gives the dealership notice of the member's intent to purchase and may reduce wait time.

When the member arrives at the participating dealership, they should inform the sales staff that they are using the Costco Auto Program and provide the specific pricing information from the website. The dealership will verify the member's Costco membership and confirm the negotiated price for the selected vehicle. At this point, the dealership should present the vehicle for inspection if the member wishes to view it.

The next stage involves test driving the vehicle if the member desires to do so. The dealership handles this portion of the process the same way they would for any customer. After the test drive, if the member wishes to proceed with the purchase, they move to the dealership's business office to discuss pricing, financing options, trade-in values, and any additional services or warranties.

In the business office, the dealership presents a detailed breakdown of the sale, including the negotiated vehicle price, destination charges, applicable rebates or incentives, trade-in value (if applicable), taxes, registration fees, and any optional add-ons the member elects. The member reviews these figures and has the opportunity to ask questions or negotiate any non-Costco negotiated items, such as financing terms, trade-in value, or optional services.

Once the member and dealership agree on all terms, the member signs the purchase agreement and related paperwork. The dealership arranges financing through a lender of the member's choice or through dealership financing options. The member receives copies of all documents and is informed of the vehicle delivery date or when they can take possession of the vehicle. The entire process, from arriving at the dealership to signing paperwork, typically takes two to four hours depending on complexity and the dealership's workload.

Takeaway: Knowing the steps involved in the purchase process allows members to prepare appropriate documentation, such as proof of Costco membership and identification, and to budget time for their dealership visit. Bringing the printed or saved pricing information from the Costco website to the dealership helps facilitate the transaction.
