Learn How to Change Your United Airlines Ticket Name

Understanding United Airlines Ticket Name Change Policies

United Airlines maintains specific rules about changing passenger names on tickets. The name on your airline ticket must match the government-issued ID you plan to use when you travel. This requirement exists for security purposes and matches regulations set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

United's policy distinguishes between minor corrections and significant name changes. A minor correction might be fixing a typo, such as "Joh" instead of "John," or adjusting how a middle name appears. These corrections often involve minimal or no fees. A significant name change involves altering the ticket to a completely different person's name or making major modifications to how your name appears on your reservation.

It's important to understand that United generally does not permit transferring a ticket from one person to another person. If your ticket is under someone else's name, you typically cannot use that ticket yourself. The ticket holder must be the person traveling. This policy applies across all ticket types, including basic economy fares and premium cabin tickets.

The timing of your name change request matters significantly. Changes made closer to your departure date may face additional restrictions or higher fees. Some changes cannot be made at all within 24 hours of departure, particularly if they involve significant name modifications.

Practical takeaway: Before purchasing your ticket, verify that you've entered your name exactly as it appears on your passport or government-issued ID. Taking this step at purchase time prevents the need for changes later and saves both money and frustration.

How to Make Minor Name Corrections

Minor name corrections on United Airlines tickets can usually be handled through several channels. These corrections include fixing spelling errors, adjusting capitalization, adding or removing middle names in standard formats, and correcting punctuation in hyphenated names.

One primary method involves contacting United Airlines directly through their website. Visit united.com and navigate to "Manage My Booking." Enter your reservation confirmation number and last name. Once you access your booking, you may see options to modify passenger information. The system will indicate which types of changes you can make online and which require contacting an agent.

Another option involves calling United Airlines' customer service at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331). Phone representatives can review your reservation and process minor corrections. When you call, have your confirmation number and the ID you'll use for travel ready. Explain the specific correction needed—for example, that your middle initial was omitted or that your last name was misspelled by one letter.

Visit a United Airlines ticket counter at any airport for in-person assistance. Bring your reservation confirmation and the ID that contains the correct name spelling. Agents at the counter can process minor corrections, though this option works best if you're already at the airport or traveling soon.

Most minor corrections incur no fee or only a small administrative charge (typically $0-$50 depending on the situation). Many corrections made well before your travel date are processed at no cost. The key to avoiding fees is making corrections as soon as you notice the error.

Practical takeaway: Contact United as soon as you identify a name discrepancy. The sooner you report the issue, the more options are available and the more likely you'll avoid fees. Keep your confirmation number handy for any communication about your reservation.

Understanding Significant Name Changes and Limitations

Significant name changes differ greatly from minor corrections. A significant change means replacing the ticketed passenger name with a substantially different name. Examples include a name change after marriage, changing from a nickname to your legal name, or any modification that alters more than one component of your name.

United Airlines generally does not permit significant name changes on already-purchased tickets. If your ticket shows "Robert Johnson" but you need it to show "Maria Garcia," United typically will not make that modification. The airline's policy treats this as a different person traveling, which violates their rules around ticket transferability and TSA security requirements.

When significant name changes are required, United typically requires you to purchase a new ticket under the correct name. The original ticket may be refundable or usable as a credit depending on your fare type. Basic economy fares, for instance, may have limited refund options. Premium fares often retain more refund value. You would need to contact United to discuss refund or credit options for your original ticket when purchasing the replacement.

Legally required name changes—such as those following marriage, divorce, or name change orders—present a particular situation. You may need to provide documentation of the legal name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order. Even with documentation, United may still require a new ticket rather than modifying the existing one.

There are exceptions to this general rule. Some airlines occasionally make exceptions for documented legal name changes, but these are handled case-by-case through customer relations departments rather than standard booking modifications. The process requires submitting documentation and often takes several business days.

Practical takeaway: If you've had a legal name change, contact United's customer relations department rather than attempting to modify your ticket through standard channels. Explain your situation and have copies of relevant legal documents ready to share. Understand that you may need to purchase a new ticket and should explore credit or refund options for your existing reservation.

Timing Considerations for Name Changes

The timing of your name change request significantly affects what modifications are possible and what you may pay. United has different policies depending on how close your request falls to your departure date.

Changes requested more than two weeks before departure typically have the most options available. Minor corrections can often be processed at no charge or with minimal fees. You have time to work through the process through online channels or phone representatives without time pressure. If complications arise, there's time to resolve them before your trip.

Between one week and two weeks before departure, your options begin narrowing. Minor corrections can generally still be made, though fees may apply more consistently. The system becomes more restrictive to prevent last-minute disruptions to flight operations and passenger manifests that have already been submitted to security authorities.

Between 24 hours and one week before departure, significant restrictions apply. Many changes cannot be made online—you must call United directly or visit a ticket counter. Some types of modifications may be impossible within this window. Fees increase substantially if changes are permitted at all.

Within 24 hours of departure, almost no name changes are permitted except in extraordinary circumstances. At this point, the passenger manifest has been finalized and submitted. United's policy becomes essentially immovable to comply with security protocols. The airline may refuse any changes and require you to purchase an entirely new ticket at full price.

Special circumstances like medical emergencies or documented errors sometimes receive different treatment regardless of timing, but these are exceptions requiring escalation to supervisory staff.

Practical takeaway: Make any name change requests as early as possible—ideally immediately after booking or when you discover an error. Changes made weeks in advance are simpler, less expensive, and more likely to be approved than those made close to departure. If you spot an error close to your travel date, contact United immediately rather than waiting.

Documentation and ID Requirements

Understanding what name must appear on your ticket is essential before attempting any changes. Your airline ticket name must match your government-issued photo ID that you'll present at the airport. The TSA and airports compare the name on your ticket to your ID at check-in. If these don't match, you may be denied boarding regardless of your ticket validity.

Acceptable government-issued IDs in the United States include passports, driver's licenses, state ID cards, military IDs, and permanent resident cards. If you're traveling internationally, a valid passport is required. The name on your chosen ID is the name that must appear on your airline ticket.

Common situations occur when people use nicknames or shortened versions of their legal names. For example, if your ID says "Elizabeth" but you typically go by "Beth," your ticket must show "Elizabeth." Alternatively, if you've legally changed your name and your ID shows the new name, your ticket must show the new name.

When contacting United about name changes, have your government-issued ID available. The representative will verify that the name you're requesting matches your ID. If you indicate you want to change your ticket name but the requested name doesn't match any ID you possess, United will decline to make the change. You cannot list a name on your ticket that you cannot prove with identification.

If you have multiple pieces of ID with different name formats (a passport showing your full name and a driver's license showing a nickname), you should choose
