Learn How to Grow Plants From Cuttings and Division

Understanding Plant Propagation: Cuttings vs. Division

Plant propagation is the process of creating new plants from existing ones. Two of the most common methods are cuttings and division. Each method works differently and suits different types of plants. Understanding the distinction between these techniques helps you choose the right approach for the plants in your garden.

Cuttings involve taking a piece of a plant—usually a stem, leaf, or root—and encouraging it to develop roots and grow into a new plant. This method works well for plants like pothos, philodendrons, succulents, herbs, and many ornamental shrubs. The cutting is separated from the parent plant and placed in soil or water until it develops its own root system. This process typically takes several weeks to a few months, depending on the plant species and environmental conditions.

Division, by contrast, involves splitting an established plant into multiple sections, each of which already has its own roots. This method works for plants that naturally form clumps or have multiple crowns, such as hostas, daylilies, snake plants, and ornamental grasses. When you divide a plant, you're essentially creating two or more independent plants from one, rather than starting from scratch as you do with cuttings.

The main advantage of cuttings is that you can create many new plants from a single parent plant. One stem cutting from a pothos plant, for example, can eventually grow into a full-sized plant. The main advantage of division is speed—divided plants are already established with roots and can grow more quickly. According to horticultural research, divided plants typically begin producing new growth within one to two weeks, while rooted cuttings may take four to eight weeks to reach a similar stage.

Practical takeaway: Before propagating any plant, identify which method suits it best. Consult a plant guide or resource specific to your plant species to determine whether cuttings or division will produce the best results.

Propagation by Stem Cuttings: Step-by-Step Process

Stem cuttings are the most popular cutting method for home gardeners because they work on a wide variety of plants and have high success rates. The process begins with selecting a healthy parent plant and choosing the right cutting material. A healthy cutting comes from a vigorous stem without disease, pest damage, or signs of stress. The best time to take stem cuttings varies by plant species—some do best in spring when new growth is most active, while others root more successfully in late summer or fall.

The cutting itself should typically be three to six inches long, though this varies by plant. For most houseplants and herbs, aim for a length that includes at least two to three sets of leaves. Using sharp, clean pruning shears or scissors is essential because a clean cut heals faster and reduces disease risk. Dull tools crush the plant tissue, which can introduce infection and slow root development. After making the cut, remove the lower leaves from the cutting, leaving only the upper two to three sets of leaves on the stem. This reduces water loss and directs the plant's energy toward root development rather than maintaining unnecessary foliage.

Many gardeners use rooting hormone to increase their success rate. Rooting hormone is a powder or liquid containing plant hormones that stimulate root formation. According to university extension studies, rooting hormone can increase success rates by 20 to 40 percent for difficult-to-root plants, though it's not strictly necessary for easy-to-root species like pothos or coleus. To use it, lightly moisten the cut end of the stem and dip it into the powder, tapping off excess. Then insert the cutting into moist soil or water.

The cutting can be rooted in either water or soil. Water rooting is popular because you can observe root development directly. Change the water every few days to maintain oxygen levels and prevent bacterial growth. Soil rooting works well too—use a light, airy soil mix such as a combination of peat moss and perlite. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the cutting in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scald tender new growth, while insufficient light slows root development. Most cuttings develop visible roots within two to four weeks, though some plants take longer.

Practical takeaway: Keep detailed notes about which cuttings you take, what plant species they came from, when you took them, and what rooting method you used. This record helps you refine your technique for future propagation attempts.

Leaf and Root Cuttings: Propagating Difficult Plants

While stem cuttings work for many plants, some species propagate more successfully through leaf or root cuttings. Leaf cuttings are particularly useful for succulents and African violets. Succulent plants like echeveria, jade plants, and aloe can produce new plants from a single leaf. To take a leaf cutting, gently twist or cut a healthy leaf from the parent plant. Allow the cut end to dry for one to three days—this callus formation prevents rot when the leaf is planted. Then place the leaf on moist soil, keeping it in bright, indirect light. Roots and a new plantlet typically develop within two to four weeks. African violets also propagate well from leaf cuttings, though they require slightly different conditions—the leaf petiole (stem) should be inserted into moist soil at a 45-degree angle, with the leaf blade resting on the soil surface.

Root cuttings work for plants that can regenerate shoots from root tissue, including houttuynia, lamb's ear, and some varieties of berry plants. This method is typically used in late fall or winter when the plant is dormant. Carefully dig around the parent plant and expose some of its roots. Cut three- to four-inch sections of healthy, pencil-thickness roots. Plant these sections horizontally about half an inch deep in moist soil. Keep the soil warm—around 70 degrees Fahrenheit—and moist. New shoots should emerge within three to six weeks.

Leaf and root cuttings require patience and careful attention to moisture levels. The cutting is more vulnerable during the early stages of root development because it has minimal or no root system to absorb water. Create a humid environment by placing a clear plastic dome or plastic bag over the cutting or by placing it in a propagation tray with a humidity dome. This reduces water loss from the leaf surface while the roots are developing. However, be careful not to create conditions so humid that fungal diseases develop. Provide some air circulation and avoid keeping soil soaking wet.

Research from the Royal Horticultural Society indicates that leaf cuttings from succulents have about a 60 to 80 percent success rate, while African violet leaf cuttings average 50 to 70 percent success. Root cuttings are somewhat less predictable, with success rates typically ranging from 30 to 70 percent depending on the plant species and how well you maintain moisture and temperature conditions.

Practical takeaway: Start with succulent leaf cuttings if you're new to this method—they're forgiving and require minimal equipment. As you gain experience, branch out to other plant types that use leaf and root cuttings.

Plant Division: Timing, Technique, and Aftercare

Division is the most straightforward form of propagation and works best on plants that naturally grow in clumps or have multiple crowns. Common candidates include hostas, daylilies, ornamental grasses, snake plants, spider plants, and many perennials. The timing of division affects plant health and success rates. Most clumping perennials and ornamental grasses divide best in early spring as new growth emerges, or in fall after flowering has finished and before the first hard frost. Spring division gives plants time to establish roots before summer heat arrives, while fall division allows them to settle in during cool weather before spring growth begins. Some gardeners report that spring division produces more vigorous growth the following season, while fall division allows plants to recover without competing with active summer growth.

Before dividing a plant, water it thoroughly one to two days before the process. Moist soil holds together better and reduces root damage during separation. Carefully dig up the entire plant, working around it with a spade to loosen the soil. Once removed from the ground, gently shake away excess soil so you can see the plant's natural divisions. Many plants separate into distinct sections with their own shoots and roots. If the plant has a tough root mass, use two garden forks placed back-to-back and work them apart to split the clump, or use a sharp spade to cut through the roots. Avoid tearing roots when possible, as tears increase disease
