Learn How to Remove Google Maps From Your Devices

Understanding Google Maps and Why You Might Want to Remove It

Google Maps is a navigation and location service that comes pre-installed on most Android devices and is available as an app on iPhones and other smartphones. The application uses GPS technology to show your location, provide directions, display traffic conditions, and offer information about businesses, restaurants, and landmarks. According to Google's 2023 data, Google Maps serves over 1 billion monthly active users worldwide, making it one of the most widely used mapping applications globally.

People choose to remove Google Maps from their devices for various reasons. Privacy concerns top the list—Google Maps collects location data, search history, and movement patterns. Some users worry about how this data is stored and used. Others remove the app to reduce storage space on their devices, as Google Maps can consume significant memory, particularly on older phones with limited capacity. Additionally, some users prefer alternative mapping services like Apple Maps, OpenStreetMap, or Waze, which may better suit their needs or offer features they value more.

It's important to understand that removing Google Maps from an Android phone differs from removing it from an iPhone. Android users often find that Google Maps comes pre-installed as a system app, which means the removal process varies depending on your phone's manufacturer and Android version. iPhone users typically have more straightforward removal options since apps aren't as deeply integrated into iOS. Understanding your device type and current setup is the first step toward making an informed decision about removal.

Before proceeding with removal, consider whether you have alternative navigation solutions in place. Many people keep at least one mapping application on their phone for emergencies or situations where they need directions. Having a backup option ensures you won't find yourself without navigation capabilities when you need them most.

Practical Takeaway: Document your reasons for wanting to remove Google Maps and identify what mapping or navigation service you'll use as a replacement before beginning the removal process.

How to Remove Google Maps From Android Devices

Android devices handle app removal differently depending on whether the app is a system app or a user-installed app. Google Maps typically comes as a system application on most Android phones, which means the standard removal process you'd use for other apps may not work. System apps are more deeply integrated into the Android operating system and cannot be uninstalled through the regular method on most devices.

The most common and safest approach for Android users is to disable Google Maps rather than attempt a complete removal. To do this, navigate to your device's Settings menu, then select "Apps" or "Applications" (the exact wording varies by manufacturer). Find Google Maps in the list of installed applications and tap it. You'll see options including "Disable," "Force Stop," or "Uninstall." On most Android devices, you'll only see the "Disable" option for system apps. Selecting "Disable" prevents the app from running and removes it from your app drawer while keeping it installed in the system partition. This approach frees up the visibility and processing power without requiring advanced technical knowledge.

Some Android manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, or Google's own Pixel phones may allow partial uninstallation of Google Maps updates. In the app information page, you might find an option to "Uninstall Updates" rather than uninstall the entire app. This removes the app updates you've received but keeps the original version that came with your phone. This option can free up storage space without completely removing the application.

For users who want complete removal and are comfortable with more technical methods, unlocking and rooting an Android device allows deeper system modifications. However, this approach carries significant risks, including voiding your warranty, compromising security, and potentially making your phone unstable. Rooting should only be attempted by experienced users who understand the consequences.

Practical Takeaway: Start with the "Disable" option in your Android Settings rather than attempting removal, as this safely prevents the app from running without risking system stability.

How to Remove Google Maps From iPhone and iPad

iPhone and iPad users have simpler options for removing Google Maps compared to Android users, since Google Maps is not a system app on Apple devices. The app functions as a standard third-party application, meaning you can remove it through standard iOS procedures without concerns about disrupting system functions.

The primary method involves locating the Google Maps icon on your home screen, then pressing and holding it until a menu appears. In this menu, select "Remove App" or "Remove." A confirmation dialog will appear asking whether you want to remove the app from your home screen only or delete it entirely. Choosing "Delete" removes the app completely from your device and frees up the storage space it was using. If you select "Remove from Home Screen Only," the app remains on your device but no longer displays on your home screens—you can still access it through the App Library if needed.

An alternative method involves opening the Settings app, navigating to "General," then selecting "iPhone Storage" or "iPad Storage." This section displays all installed apps ranked by the amount of storage they consume. Google Maps typically uses between 100 MB to 500 MB depending on how much map data you've cached. Find Google Maps in the list, tap it, and select "Offload App" or "Delete App." The "Offload App" option removes the app but preserves any associated data, while "Delete App" removes everything.

After removing Google Maps, you should verify it's gone by checking your home screens and searching for it using Spotlight Search (swipe down from the home screen and type "Google Maps"). If it doesn't appear, the removal was successful. Keep in mind that you can always reinstall Google Maps later from the App Store if your needs change, as Apple keeps a record of apps you've previously obtained.

Practical Takeaway: Use the press-and-hold method on your iPhone home screen for the quickest removal, or use Settings for a more detailed view of how much storage space the app occupies before deciding whether to remove it.

Setting Up Alternative Navigation Apps Before Removal

Before removing Google Maps, installing and testing an alternative navigation application is wise. Several options exist, each with different strengths and features. Apple Maps comes pre-installed on iPhones and has improved significantly in recent years, offering offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and integration with Siri. If you're an iOS user, Apple Maps provides a straightforward replacement without requiring additional installation.

Waze, owned by Google but operating as a separate app, offers real-time traffic updates and crowdsourced information from other drivers about accidents, police, and road hazards. Many users prefer Waze for daily commuting because of its interactive community features. Waze is available for both iOS and Android at no cost.

OpenStreetMap-based applications like OsmAnd and Maps.me provide detailed mapping information and excellent offline capabilities. These apps let you download map regions to your phone for use without an internet connection, which is particularly valuable if you travel to areas with limited cellular service. Maps.me is free on both platforms, while OsmAnd offers a free version with a paid option for additional features.

For Android users specifically, HERE WeGo offers professional-grade mapping with strong offline support and is used by many businesses for fleet management. Magic Earth combines multiple data sources and provides offline maps. Each alternative has different strengths regarding privacy, offline functionality, user interface, and feature sets.

Testing your chosen alternative for at least one week before removing Google Maps allows you to verify it meets your navigation needs. Take it on your regular commute, try searching for specific locations you frequently visit, and test directions in both familiar and unfamiliar areas. This testing period helps you identify any limitations and ensures you won't be left without navigation capabilities after removal.

Practical Takeaway: Install and test your alternative navigation app in real-world situations for several days before removing Google Maps, ensuring it reliably handles the types of navigation you perform most frequently.

Understanding Storage and Performance Changes After Removal

Removing Google Maps produces measurable changes in your device's storage and performance. Google Maps varies in size depending on your device and whether you've cached offline maps. On a typical device, the application itself occupies between 100 MB and 500 MB of storage space. If you've downloaded offline maps for multiple cities or regions, the app could use significantly more space—up to several gigabytes in some cases. Removing it directly increases available storage on your phone.
