Learn What's Encoded in Your Driver's License Barcode
Understanding Driver's License Barcode Basics
Your driver's license contains a barcode—usually a two-dimensional (2D) barcode on the back—that holds encoded information about you. This barcode is not a random pattern of lines and squares. Instead, it contains specific data that state motor vehicle departments use for identification and verification purposes. The barcode exists primarily to speed up transactions at places like banks, retailers, and law enforcement agencies that need to verify your identity.

The two main types of barcodes found on modern driver's licenses are PDF417 barcodes and QR codes. Most U.S. states use the PDF417 format, which looks like a grid of small rectangular shapes. This format can store a significant amount of information in a compact space. Some states have begun experimenting with QR codes, which are square patterns with three larger squares in the corners—the same technology used to direct people to websites when scanned with a smartphone.
The barcode technology became standard on driver's licenses during the 1980s and 1990s as states sought faster ways to verify identity information. Before barcodes, police officers and store clerks had to manually read and record information from the license itself. The barcode made this process quicker and reduced errors that came from handwriting mistakes or misreading.
It's important to understand that the barcode is simply a digital representation of information already printed on your license in human-readable form. Nothing secret or hidden is stored in the barcode that isn't also visible elsewhere on your card. The barcode serves as a machine-readable copy of the same data that appears as text on your license.
Practical Takeaway: When you see a barcode scanned at a store or by law enforcement, that scanner is simply reading the same personal information that's printed in text on your license—nothing more.
What Information the Barcode Contains
The barcode on your driver's license encodes personal identification data that matches what appears elsewhere on the card. This typically includes your full name, date of birth, gender, address, license number, and the expiration date of your license. The barcode may also contain your height, eye color, hair color, and any restrictions on your driving privileges (such as corrective lenses requirement or automatic transmission only).

The specific data stored varies slightly by state, as each state's motor vehicle department designs its own barcode format. However, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) provides a standard format that most states follow. This standard ensures that barcodes from different states can be read by the same scanning equipment, which is helpful for law enforcement agencies and businesses that operate across state lines.
One common misconception is that your Social Security number (SSN) is encoded in the barcode. In reality, most states do NOT include the full SSN in the barcode. Some states may include the last four digits of your SSN as an additional identifier, but this is limited and not universal across all states. Your complete SSN is kept in a separate database that is not encoded in the barcode itself.
Similarly, your driver's license barcode does not contain sensitive financial information, medical history, criminal records, or voting information. The barcode is designed specifically to store driver-related data and basic identification information. Any other personal details about you are stored in separate databases maintained by government agencies, employers, healthcare providers, and financial institutions—not on your physical license.
The barcode also encodes information about the license itself: which state issued it, when it was issued, and when it expires. This helps verify that your license is legitimate and current. Some barcodes include security features that indicate whether the license has been tampered with or altered.
Practical Takeaway: The barcode contains only the personal identification information already visible on your license—name, birthdate, address, license number, restrictions, and expiration date—with minor variations by state.
How to Read and Scan Your Own Barcode
If you want to see what information is encoded in your driver's license barcode, several options exist. The most straightforward method is to use a barcode scanning application on your smartphone. Many free barcode reader apps available through the Apple App Store or Google Play can scan PDF417 barcodes. To use these apps, simply launch the application, point your phone's camera at the barcode on your license, and the app will display the encoded information.

When you scan your barcode with a personal device, you'll typically see the data displayed in a structured format, often organized by field. You might see something like: Name: [Your Name], DOB: [Your Date of Birth], Address: [Your Address], License Number: [Your License Number], and so on. The exact format and order depend on which scanning app you use, as different developers present the information differently.
Another way to understand your barcode is to contact your state's motor vehicle department directly. Many states now provide online portals where you can view your driver's license information after logging in with your credentials. This official information matches what's encoded in your barcode. You can also request a printed copy of your driving record from your state's motor vehicle department, which will list all the information associated with your license.
Some retail stores and financial institutions use barcode scanners as part of age verification or identity confirmation during transactions. When a store clerk scans your license, they are reading the same barcode data. If you're curious about what was scanned, you could ask the clerk—though they typically don't have access to displays that show raw barcode data; their system simply confirms that the license is valid and real.
Be cautious about which barcode scanning apps you download. Ensure you're using apps from reputable developers with good reviews. Some less trustworthy applications might collect your data for purposes beyond simply reading the barcode. Stick with well-established apps from major companies or those with transparent privacy policies.
Practical Takeaway: You can decode your own license barcode using free smartphone scanning apps or by checking your information through your state's online driver record portal.
Security Features and Barcode Protection
Modern driver's licenses include multiple security features designed to prevent counterfeiting and fraud. The barcode itself is one component of this security system. Many barcodes include embedded error-correction technology that allows the barcode to remain readable even if portions are damaged or obscured. This error correction also helps scanners detect if a barcode has been digitally altered or falsified.

The physical license card also contains security elements beyond the barcode. These may include holograms, microprinting (tiny text visible only under magnification), ultraviolet (UV) ink that only appears under special light, and watermarks embedded in the card material itself. Some states use specialized printing techniques that make it extremely difficult to replicate the card's appearance. These security features work together to create a multi-layered defense against forged licenses.
The information stored in the barcode is tied to official records maintained in your state's motor vehicle database. When a scanner reads your barcode, it can be compared against this database to verify that your information matches official records. If someone attempts to create a fake license with a barcode containing false information, that barcode data won't match what's in the official database—which will immediately indicate fraud.
It's worth noting that the barcode itself is not encrypted in the way financial data might be. This is by design: the barcode needs to be readable by many different organizations without requiring special decryption keys or passwords. However, the actual use of barcode data by businesses and law enforcement is regulated by privacy laws, and organizations are supposed to use barcode scans only for legitimate purposes related to the transaction at hand.
To protect your own barcode information, treat your driver's license the same way you treat other important identification documents. Don't leave it unattended in public, avoid lending it to others, and be cautious about where you present it. If your license is lost or stolen, report it to your state's motor vehicle department promptly so it can be flagged in the system. This prevents someone else from using your barcode information fraudulently.
Practical Takeaway: Your license's barcode includes error-correction technology and works alongside physical security features to prevent counterfeiting and to verify authenticity against official state records.
