BYD's vehicle lineup spans from compact city cars to larger sedans and SUVs. As of 2024, the company produces several distinct model families under different brand names. The Yuan Plus (also called Atto 3 in some markets) has become one of their most popular compact SUVs. The Song series includes multiple electric versions designed for families and daily commuting. The Qin series focuses on plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles for buyers wanting multiple powertrain options. The Dolphin represents BYD's entry into the compact hatchback market with an affordable price point.

The company manufactures vehicles using its own battery technology, which it also sells to other automakers. This vertical integration means BYD controls quality across the entire production process. Their batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which offers different performance characteristics than the nickel-based batteries used by many competitors. LFP batteries tend to have longer lifespans and better thermal stability, though they typically have lower energy density.

BYD vehicles are available in different markets with varying model names and specifications. A car sold as the Yuan Plus in China might be called the Atto 3 in Australia or the Song in other regions. Battery sizes and driving ranges also vary by market to match local driving patterns and charging infrastructure.

Takeaway: BYD offers multiple electric vehicle models across different size and price categories. Researching which models are sold in your specific region will show you what options may be available through local dealers.

Popular BYD Electric Models and Their Specifications

The BYD Yuan Plus (Atto 3) stands as one of the company's most successful models globally. This compact SUV measures approximately 4.4 meters long and seats five passengers. The vehicle comes with different battery options ranging from 44.9 kWh to 60.48 kWh in various markets. In laboratory testing, these versions achieve driving ranges between 305 kilometers and 480 kilometers on a single charge, depending on the battery size and driving conditions. The Yuan Plus features a modern cabin with an 8-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen display, climate control, and driver assistance features like lane-keeping assist and collision warning systems.

The BYD Song family includes multiple models. The Song Plus DM-i combines a gasoline engine with electric motor technology for buyers wanting a hybrid option. The Song Pro EV is a fully electric version designed for families, with more interior space than the Yuan Plus. It offers battery options from 44.9 kWh up to 59.52 kWh, with driving ranges spanning from approximately 305 kilometers to 445 kilometers depending on conditions and battery selection. The Song series typically includes a larger trunk than comparable compact SUVs, with some versions offering over 500 liters of cargo space.

The BYD Dolphin represents BYD's smallest electric model, targeting buyers seeking an affordable, city-friendly vehicle. This hatchback measures 4.07 meters in length and offers battery options starting from 30.08 kWh. The smaller battery versions achieve ranges around 205 kilometers, while larger batteries push the range toward 401 kilometers. The Dolphin's compact size makes it particularly suited for urban driving and parking in tight spaces. It seats five passengers and includes features like automatic climate control, electric windows, and infotainment systems with smartphone connectivity options.

The BYD Qin series focuses on plug-in hybrid technology, where the vehicle can run on electric power alone for daily driving but has a gasoline engine as backup for longer trips. The Qin DM-i models offer electric driving ranges between 50 kilometers and 110 kilometers before the gasoline engine engages, making them suitable for buyers with daily commutes but concern about longer journey planning.

Takeaway: Different BYD models offer varying sizes, battery capacities, and driving ranges. Matching your typical daily driving distance to the range capabilities of specific models helps determine which vehicle might meet your needs.

Battery Technology and Driving Range Information

BYD manufactures batteries using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which differs from the lithium nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistries used in many other electric vehicles. Each chemistry type has distinct advantages and considerations. LFP batteries typically last longer in laboratory testing, often maintaining 80 percent of their capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles or more. They also perform better in cold weather and high-temperature environments compared to some alternative chemistries, though they require more cells to achieve the same energy density as nickel-based alternatives.

Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A BYD Dolphin with a 44.9 kWh battery stores less energy than a Yuan Plus with a 60.48 kWh battery. However, driving range depends on multiple factors beyond battery size. Real-world range typically falls 15 to 25 percent below manufacturer estimates when accounting for highway driving, cold weather, and normal driving patterns. City driving extends range compared to highway driving because highways typically require sustained high speeds, which increases energy consumption. Cold temperatures reduce available range by 20 to 40 percent because batteries operate less efficiently and vehicle heating requires energy from the battery.

BYD's battery technology emphasizes longevity and thermal safety. LFP chemistry is less prone to thermal runaway, a condition where battery cells overheat uncontrollably. This characteristic has made LFP popular among manufacturers prioritizing safety. Battery warranties for BYD vehicles typically cover eight years or 160,000 kilometers, whichever comes first, with coverage guaranteeing that the battery retains at least 80 percent of its original capacity. Some regional markets may offer different warranty terms.

Charging speed depends on the charger type available. Home Level 2 chargers typically add 8 to 10 kilometers of range per hour of charging. DC fast chargers at public stations can add 200 kilometers of range in 30 minutes under ideal conditions, though charging speed decreases as the battery approaches full capacity. Battery management systems in BYD vehicles automatically moderate charging rates to protect battery longevity, meaning actual fast-charging speeds may be somewhat slower than peak rates.

Takeaway: Understanding your typical driving distances and local charging infrastructure availability helps determine whether a specific BYD model's battery capacity and range match your lifestyle needs. Battery performance also varies with temperature and driving conditions.

Pricing and Market Availability

BYD electric vehicle pricing varies substantially by region, model, battery capacity, and trim level. In China, where BYD has the largest market presence, the Dolphin starts around 73,800 yuan (approximately $10,200 USD) for base models with smaller batteries. The Yuan Plus begins around 109,800 yuan (approximately $15,200 USD) for entry-level versions. Song series models range from approximately 139,800 yuan (about $19,300 USD) and upward depending on size and battery selection. These Chinese prices reflect lower manufacturing costs in China and different tax structures compared to other markets.

In international markets, BYD pricing reflects importation costs, local taxes, and regional pricing strategies. In Australia, where BYD has significant sales, the Atto 3 (Yuan Plus equivalent) starts around AUD $44,990 (approximately $30,500 USD) for the base model with a smaller battery. In Europe, where BYD began deliveries more recently, pricing for comparable models ranges higher due to additional regulatory compliance costs and market positioning. Southeast Asian markets in Thailand and Indonesia see pricing between Chinese and Western levels, reflecting manufacturing partnerships and regional demand.

Vehicle pricing typically increases with battery capacity. A BYD model with a 30 kWh battery might cost $5,000 to $8,000 less than the same model with a 60 kWh battery, depending on the market. Additional features like all-wheel drive (available on some models) add $3,000 to $6,000 to the base price. Advanced driver assistance packages, premium interior materials, and
